Pedro. Upset the Gods? Could be any number of dodgy, illegal and morally questionable dealings in my past life. Just pick one! The list is long.

Tired, man. Very, very tired. 30-40 earthquakes a day at the moment. US Experts over here are stunned by the magnitude of the lateral/vertical gs compared to the standard Richter-scale numbers that are coming up. I had a 50mm paving tile lying flat in the garage. Broken. The Steinway is getting into a bit of B&D at the moment. Bro would kill me is I scratched the paint!

Previoulsy undamaged multi-story buildings in town are now leaning. The central city is munted.

Our build is going well. I am so pleased that we are moving forward. Plenty of folks are moving backwards.

What can you do? Just move forward and try to stop thinking about the sleeping underground evil.

    Alpha.

    Re: Life in Christchurch

Sleep deprevatin is really evil to the human being (which is obviously why the millitary find it so 'useful') I can only guess what it is like over there, I turn into a 'grumpy old git' after just one or two nights of disturbed slumber.

There must be real strange things going on down below, I've read quite a lot of papers on seismic activity (need to know about these things for my work) and there are always many 'postulations' into various scenarios and what the generated responses will be - the techies will love what you are going through, real life data is very valuable. The one in ten thousand data that we use will no doubt be updated and as previously commented on the lateral 'g's can be partularly damaging even at a relatively low level .................... this is some major 'experiment'!

Moving forwards has to be great and the only thing to do ......................... just takes 'special' people to keep going in such adverse circumstances, much easier to slowly 'sink'.

Great to see the sun shining over there, been cr.p here for the last week or so ...... but since there is f..k all I can do about it so be it!

    Re: Life in Christchurch

...an English Summer or an Aotearoa Winter? We are having a wickedly good start to the winter, have to say, but El Niño is transitioning into La Niña soon so we are expecting 'nasty bastard' Antarctic blasts soon, curses.

This place is crawling with PHds and their with sycophantic ass lickers (all complete with pocket protectors and impressive ranges of pens). The international scientific community is having a (shakey) field day. An enormous amount of data is being gathered. Good on them. I shudder to think of the raw material currently being supplied for future seminars...Zzzzzzzz.

67 aftershocks yesterday and we are up to 34 today. Interesting. Character building.

It is oft' quoted that if you want to find the true character of a gentleman, take the gent golfing. I have a new test of character. Let said man live through 7371 earthquakes and check how straight he sits in a hard chair afterwards.

Character. I have a good friend who has a nasty case of arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, and folks often attempt to cheer him up by saying that his troubles must be quite character building. He replies that "If I build any more 'character', I will start sh!tting the stuff". Whenever I start to feel hard done by, I think of Andi's struggles and return to reality PDQ.

There are always folks in more dire situations. Trouble is, we tend to magnify the relatively small personal challenges faced in life to the detriment of all the great stuff that we are achieving on a daily basis.

Philosophy 101 done for the evenng. Extreme fatigue and dry martinis. Potent mixture.

    Later, Ladies. Alpha.

I admire your ability to face up to extreme situations, deal with it, and move on. Time after time.

    Re: Life in Christchurch

    Cheers, Gents.

I have no doubt that you would show great strength of character in similar circumstances. Let's hope you don't have to prove your worth.

We had more fatalaties on Monday. Nowhere as many as February, but one soul lost is one too many.

Family week this week. All of the schools are closed. They shut down for 5 days automatically after anything over a 5.0 for engineering checks. Most markets were down as well with stock damage. Garages running dry.

I have my 8*4 netted trialer fully loaded with everything needed for approx 1 month of supplies and living/sleeping quarters (called a 'big ****-off tent' in these parts...) for 4.1 people, if we loose the house and/or Tsunami. 100 litres of fuel and ditto water. Cookers and gas bottles. I top up the car every 100kms to make sure we have a full tank at all times. Suitcases are packed with winter clothes and sit beside the car in the garage. I now don't have to worry about panic buying, I just dip into the supplies after a big event and stock up after the dust has settled.

Lots of damage around the seaside cliffs this time with massive boulders (think mid-size truck) landing in folk's back yards. They have upgraded Monday's big one to 6.3 and, as I said, are still trying to work out why we are having such high ground-level g-forces with 'relatively' small richter scale numbers.

The sun is just coming up on a crisp winter's morn. I celebrate every day that I see a sunrise. Positive, positive, positive!

    Re: Life in Christchurch

Good luck with that, I lived in Japan for a while and was unfortunate enough to be in Tokyo earlier this year when the big one hit.....was very glad to get out of there and back to a more static piece of terra firma.

I think you need a bigger trailer....where are you going to put the bike if you have to escape with just the bare essentials?

    Re: Life in Christchurch

I'm okay, Chris. Pretty ****ing raw though. If I did't have the family to look after, I think I might loose the plot though. One benefit of being the alpha male.

Miraz, good thinking! Throw out all of the supplies and load up the bike. Priorities.

    Re: Life in Christchurch

Thanks, Man. Appreciate the sentiment, but this shit ain't over. Predictions are for a further 10 years of aftershocks. We are now thinking seriously of getting the new house finished and letting it out a professional couple, then **** off to Australia for some tinnies and bbq'd shrimps. Everyone here is numb. We are just ****ing over it. Excuse my french. The old dear in the local bookshop (pushing 80, well educated, minds her Ps and s), said to me today "Gaz, I'm ****ing sick of this place". I had to chuckle. Bit like Mrs Queen uttering a colourful expletive. Some interesting pics in today's paper. I'll scan them.
