New laws just went into effect: 50mph over = $1000 fine for 1st offense, $2500 fine + 1 year license suspension for 2nd offense, and $5000 fine + 10 year license suspension for 3rd offense - glad I only go about 30mph over.

That rots. Hey if you are up here in Illinois follow the speed limits in construction zones. They have camera's up and will ticket you.

Ironic don't you think that we're discussing "50 mile over" fines? How many other bike/rider groups would gripe about the same thing? Got to love the Blackbird for what it's capable of doing. |

That's not all.
The same fines apply to an improperly attached license plate and anyone who lifts a tire off the pavement. One inch off will cost you $1000!
So, better have your license plate where its the most visible and don't dare get a tire off the ground.
Tax money is drying up so they had to think of another way to make money.
Sure, we know the laws were meant for the stunters, but they apply to EVERYONE and the cops love to sit on their asses and collect money.
I talked to a couple of HD riders at the gas station yesterday and they thought these were great laws and then proceeded to recount tales of crotch rocket guys doing wheelies on I-75.
You know what? We KNEW the damn squids would ruin it for the rest of us, but we just didn't/couldn't do anything about it. In fact, the idiots on TV and Youtube, etc. probably had more to do with this than anyone else.
Consider yourselves warned. These laws will travel.

Here in Southern Oz, if you go 50kmh (31mph) over the limit, you lose your vehicle (car or bike) for a couple of days, $700 impound fee, speeding fine, a day in court with all associated court costs. You do it a second time and everything escalates to a huge fine and bye-bye vehicle for a couple of months. Do it a third time and you lose your vehicle permanently along with your licence.
You yanks have got it easy........

I just got a pretty decent fine. All things considered I got off pretty easy. The screwy part is, I got a 15-day license suspension . . . in a state where I don't hold a driver's license (but I drive there daily). I asked if I needed to get an occupational license to get to and from work. They said I couldn't because I didn't hold a license there. I asked how they could suspend a license that didn't exist. The guy responded that if I tried to get a license there, I couldn't because it was suspended. I pointed out that a) I didn't want a license there and b) by the time I got it, the suspension would be up.
Next I called the neighboring state where I DO have a license. I was informed that it was not on suspension. I asked for an occupational license to be safe. He said I couldn't get one until my license was suspended. I have a feeling I'll get a suspension in that state that will be over by the time they hear about it. It's comically screwed up.
I'm just worried about getting in an accident. Would I have a suspended license?

Top speed where I live (west coast of Norway) is 50mph. If you do 100mph on the freeway (50mph speed limit) you go to jail for 6 months and get a 4000$ fee. So stop whining about your 1000$ ticket..!

leftlaner... How do you stay out of jail? You have no place where you can take the bird over 50mph? That must be like torture. Keeping a bird under 50.

You might as well own a Hardly if that is the law. Damn that sucks!
Why even ride a Bird if you can't take it up to a comfortable speed?

There's a reason why I have a laser jammer in front of my bike, and a licence plate that flips down at a flick of a switch.. Tough conditions call for tough solutions don't you know..

I'd like to do something like that to mine. Riding to work has been agony lately. I had 60 straight miles of open road at 4:00am and I was stuck around 70mph. Slower in a few areas. Of course, I couldn't resist surging here and there, but I HATE riding on an empty road at a pointlessly slow speed.

Man...luckily I've never been caught on a bike... The only time I was ever "lit up"...I was doin about 180MPH and by the time I realized that it was even a cop...he was over the horizon lol.
I know that in Texas 25mph over is a felony...as far as fines...there's no tellin. I wish that there were more ways around this crap. I hate going the speed limit...and I don't know how I would live anywhere I couldn't go over 50...the bike lugs in top gear there...doesn't even really become snappy until 90-100 lol.
I wish we could go faster...and now a lot of the police are going to infrared lasers or something like that undetecable on the radar detectors...unfortunately...I hate to make those guys cars get embarrased when I'm in 3rd gear!

I got popped going 91 in a 60 in the beautiful city of Bulverde Texas with just a citation. Of course my dumb ass slowed down and waited about five minutes for him to catch up. I should've dropped a gear or two, taken the next exit, and the cop never would have had anything to chase but nooooooooooo I had to stop. The cop was cool about it asking about how fast my bike was while writing the ticket.
SO......... I went to court and plead "not guilty" because I couldn't take defensive driving nor differed adjudication. The DA called my name off to the side and asked me why I was pleading not guilty and I told him I did not wanting this on my driving record. I then told him that I would pay the fine and court costs if this ticket didn't show up on my driving record and you know what he said????
You can pay the fine and court costs now?
I said "yes"
He said..... sure no problem... go to the clerk, pay your $300 and you have a five day differment.
So to make a long story short.... I paid the fine with five days of probation and it not showing on my driving record.
All these A holes want is your money... you can pretty much negotiate the driving record thing if you plead not guilty and pay the stiffs.
Something to ponder my fellow Bird riders............

Something to ponder my fellow Bird riders............ | What are the chances of that happening. I just got a ticket for doing a wheelie last night , the cop was cool thought and gave me a speeding ticket instead of wreckless driving, stating i only went 10-15 miles over the speed limit(i was doing about 45 in a 40 anyways). I should and could of just lost him in 5 seconds, but sometimes that takes more balls than i have . I was talking to the cop and he was pretty cool, hes had 9 tickets and 1 dui before he was a cop lol. He said i could try and ask the judge just to pay the fine without any points on my license, but it all depends on the judge.
