Where should I start? In a state that gets 4 feet of rainfall every year you can understand that we get our share of foul weather. I heard somewhere recently that the National Weather Service's 10 day accuracy is still only about 60%. I can do that with a quarter. If you've lived here long enough you know when the time comes to run like hell. I've seen Camille, Katrina, a host of lesser storms, and a 500 year flood in my lifetime. There were always warnings but nothing can prepare you for the damage that it does to the people. When you take away lights, water, gasoline and most importantly food it changes people. Americans don't know how to fend for themselves anymore.
Many would starve to death waiting for the feds to show up rather than go into the woods and find something to eat. On a lighter note, (and this is a true story) as Katrina was kicking our ass, the wife and I were at the local drug store buying provisions while outside 80 mph. winds rattled the stores windows. A fellow in front of us in line completed his purchase of a styrofoam ice chest, and a large pack of batteries. He put the batteries inside the ice chest and rested the ice chest in the palm of his right hand as he proceeded toward the exit. As he stepped on the pressure pad for the door he hit the button on his umbrella, raised it over his head and stepped out into the gale force winds. I felt sorry for the man but by God it was hilarious. And it was the only funny thing about Katrina.
I'll get off my soapbox now. My Bird still shines like a new penny.
