I'm a fixed wing nut. tried heli but preferred fixed. I'm mostly into pattern and scale. used to compete in FAI 3A and giant scale. Here is one of my latest projects, a 98" scratch built Corsair. The light blue/grey is actually about 10 different shades to get the weathered effect.

    Yeah not uncommon...

A significant amount of time on the simulator is required

    Re: Radio Control

I got into RC back in 1989, father was killed in an accident and I needed something other then work and doing yard work when I got home. It was good to get with a bunch of guys that enjoyed it as much as I did. Started out with a trainer and went on to many of different planes and one 30 size helicopter. In 1998 the Ex. had to go find herself! So with me being a full time dad/mom of a 10 year old daughter and keeping house, there was no time for RC. So the few planes I had were sold and the this and that's were packed up and put away. I stop and look at the items and think how I should get back into it as it was a fun and challenging time. I would very much recommend the hobby to anyone that has a young child that wants to do something to spend quality time with. :-) I just might open those tout boxes and take a boo, and check into a club meeting.

@ Beaver - teach your daughter to fly - she might really love it. You never know with young girls just what they will enjoy. I taught my one son, and we had a ball together for many many years. He has a Masters in Aeronautical Engineering and flies for the RCAF now. Those were lovely memories and times. Maybe you might get lucky and have them with your daugther. Sorry about the wife - mine decided the same thing after 40 years. I'm still pretty much fu**ed up by it.
Oh - isn't there a big model get together in Margaree each year? - good excuse for a trip!

I've been into Controlline stunt models since grade 5,...on and off over the years. One of my own designs pictured here. 56 inch wing span, a profile fuselage model. Super Tigre-46 for power up front.

I have an E-sky Belt Helicopter. Went the whole hog and bought the precision alloy rotor assy, carbon fibre blades, top of the range speed controller and the latest, greatest gyro.... Looks absolutely spanking... Took it for a fly, got it in the air, it did some weird reverse move and then slammed into the ground...
After replacing the parts again. I tried another fly and realised this is one of the most complicated Choppers to fly. It now sits in m Study gathering dust but i do intend on taking it out again. I think my problem is i don't possess the steady hands of a brain surgeon and the controls are so damn twitchy.

    Re: Radio Control

@ Bach, Yes there use to be a big fly in Margaree Cape Breton. Never went to it, sounded like a nice time. My daughter is now 24 and has just moved to Iqaluit, Nunavut. I can remember her sitting on my lap or me on one knee helping her keep the plane in the air. I always kept it 5-10 mistakes high when she tried to fly. I miss those days. As for the Ex. She did me a favor,an Angel came along took good care of me and my child, and has never asked nothing of me. Life is full of givers and takers right.

Very interesting comment - I have felt exactly the same thing in my situation. I once lived in Charlottetown. I took my son to Margaree and we had the most wonderful time together. The trip on the long ferry in the fog was a memory I will never forget. Sorry your daughter is so far away. My one son is in Comox BC and the one daughter is in Pheonix Az. We skype on my youngest daughters computer, which is a fantastic way to communicate. I wish I could say that I didn't miss the ex. For 40 years she was my best friend and lover and you just don't get over that - still love her like crazy.

Gazman - I have been into models since I was about 9 years old. Find an "expert" in your area, and have him set up your copter. There are dozens of little things that can crash you, and an expert can take your bird up, and have the skill to save it, and adjust things till they are correct. If you hook up to his transmitter with yours, most systems allow him to let you control only one function at a time. That way you can learn one control at a time. We have a guy called Scott Grey. He is ranked in the top thrree helicopter pilots in the World. When he was young he flew fixed wing in competition with my son (who usually beat him). One year Scott decided to learn helicopters. He spent 4 hours a day on the simulator for an entire winter and emerged a fantastic pilot. Get help - and - get a simulator - you will have a blast when you get the hang of it! Good luck Mate.

Ummm... Yes they did Ugly. I played it to death, so much so, i thought i was ready top hop into an Apache. I seem to have trouble translating what i have learnt on the simulator into real time flying.

Thanks Bach. I have heard there are guys out there that can train you. I You Tubed this Helo and WTF... the guys are making them fly upside down. I can do that as well as it is usually upside down seconds before it slams into the ground . There is a R.C club near by that i might check out. I'm at a stage where i will put my pride aside and ask for help so i can get some enjoyment from it.
