Not Happy Jan.........

I was booked in to do the California Superbike School at the Phillip Island MotoGP track on the 17th Jan.

I thought I had a minor sprain in my right wrist after "dealing" with a drunk/drugged patient at work on Christmas night. After having my wrist checked out again today, I found out that I have snapped the ligament that joins two bones in the wrist (the scaphoid and the lunate bones). This means my wrist gets put into a full plaster cast tomorrow morning and stays in the cast until I go in for surgery sometime in the next month. Then it will be probably another 6 weeks or so in another cast until everything heals.

NOT HAPPY JAN.....................

P.S. I have already asked about being in a half cast, and the answer was an emphatic "NO".

P.P.S. Sorry, but I dont really need any help in maintaining the integrity of my fuel system by having other people ride my bird - but thanks for the offer.........

Sorry to hear about that, Paul. Ligament damage is the worst. I hope you have a speedy recovery.

Re: Not Happy Jan.........

Not nice but I can assure you it is for the best!
I had an 'off' 8 years ago and exploded my right elbow (amongst other things) the doctor wouldn't buy the fact that my wrist was damaged as well "its transmitted pain from the broken elbow" .............. 8 months later a minimum of 5 fractures (scaphoid and the lunate bones included) + busted ligament diagnosed. The wrist will never be (or look) the same again ..... so whilst I, like you would be very unhappy, getting it sorted is a small price to pay IMHO.
That said, what timing, heal quickly.

Re: Not Happy Jan.........

That will teach you to tape your wrists before you go to work, huh?

What about a removable cast that you can take off at night and to shower? I have never been able to keep a cast on for more than a few days before anxiety drove me to removal.

Re: Not Happy Jan.........

Paul sorry to hear about your little accident, I had a little calf muscle tear on the 30th while skiing in powder. There was little snow base so I hooked the boot under a fixed tree root that was just under the surface "ouch". Limping a wee bit now but I'm booked for the March Cali Superbike School at Willow Springs so I'll write a full report about the school and the new BMW RR1000.

Heal quickly now and book the next school.

Re: Not Happy Jan.........

Damn, that sucks. Have you considered the extra thick cast, (since they won't go for half), to help demonstrate your dissapointment to the patient in question, should you meet again? (Access to records is handy...)

You're a righty, and thus doubly unlucky. That's like adding an insult to injury. I'm sorry for you twice over, Nutter. Anyway, heal fast.

If you are talking about our lower sphincter (the body has two), the no it doesnt have one - ligaments join bones together.

If you are talking about the derro lying in the gutter just down the road, then he probably has a couple of hundred in him.

Re: Not Happy Jan.........

Had the consultation with the orthopaedic surgeon. He checked the X-xrays and CT scans and was busy telling me that all there is, is some slight trauma to the scaphoid bone in the wrist. Six weeks of immobilisation and rest and it should be as good as new. Then he performed one last test and I heard him mutter something along the lines of "might as well forget about the MRI scans I just booked". He looked up and said that my wrist was looking pretty good until that final test. He was able to dislocate some of the bones with almost no effort whatsoever. It appears that I have snapped the scapho-lunate ligament in my wrist, and it is not something that will just heal by itself.

I am just waiting for a call from his rooms to let me know when the surgery has been booked for. Hooks, sutures and K-wires. No riding at all for 6-8 weeks after the op . But on the bright side, at least I will be able to ride again.

Jeez Paul, you better either stop beating on the loonies or invest in some brass knuckles.

Re: Not Happy Jan.........

I am going to be offline for a couple of days. I am scheduled for surgery to the wrist tomorrow afternoon to either repair or re-attach the ligament between the scaphoid and lunate bones.

Since my surgeon is not a member here, I can say that I slipped the splint off my arm for a couple of hours today (had the plaster cut off and a plastic half cast put on instead) and went for one last ride through the Pakenham hills. Last bit of fun I am going to have for the next couple of months......

Good luck with that Paul. Hopefully its not the hand that you prefer for pleasuring yourself. If it is than think of it this way. Using your other hand will make it feel like you are with a different person. Just kidding. I do hope that you have a speedy recovery.

Well Paul, I know it's the shiits right now, but try to think a few years down the road. Take care of yourself while your young, because as you get older, those old injuries have a way of making your life hell......at 46 I can feel every get off, and drunked fall down I've ever had.

I wish you a speedy recovery.
