I bet most of you are out riding as you should be. Me, I had to fix the Bird this past weekend, it seems that the insulation on the stator wore off and let it ground out on the motor. I cannot believe Honda wants $230 for a new stator . Now I will always be the one to go OEM but that is just crazy, what are they trying to do retire early?? Anyhow I got an aftermarket stator which puts out 20% (claimed) more power than the stock unit for only $130 shipped to my door.
So if you notice your bike starting a bit hard and you go to test the battery do your self a favor and check the stator output as well.
Ride safe & I will see you in July

It's the escalating price of copper. Electrical gremlins always seem to be the most expensive for their size. Just gotta deal with them and keep on ridin'.

With the charging system being the weak link on our beloved birds, it would behoove you to have a way to constantly monitor the system. I saw this volt meter in a previous post and have one installed on my bird. DigitalMeter.com - Digital Panel Meters manufactured by DATEL
About 350 miles into a 1200mile round trip I notice the voltage down to 11.6. You guessed it R/R up. Turned around and was able to nurse it home. Had I not had the meter I could have very well been 600 miles from home with a dead bike....
I connected it to a wire that powers up with the key behind the speedo and used some velcro to secure to the top of the speedo.
Heres a few pics

| Hmmm. So I'm out for a short ride after cleanin the Bird, and I stop at the gas station to fuel up. Afterwards I go to start her up and...nothing; a little half-assed sputter actually. Perplexed, I look and see the oil light on and think "well I didn't check the oil this morning". Turns out, wasn't the oil, (and what happened in the ensuing hour and a half was embarrassingly funny, but I'll tell it if you ask) but I had to get a boost to get her back home. Could my issue be similar? Battery was bought brand new in April from Honda shop.

Army Strong, OK I'm asking. What happened in the ensuing hour and a half that was embarrassingly funny?

When I checked mine it should have been putting out about 13 volts AC at idle and around 40 to 50 volts AC @ 5000 rpm. Mine was doing 1 volt AC at idle & 3 volts AC @ 5000 rpm. So I knew the stator was toast. Luckily it did not do any damage to the R/R or battery. Oh and if you check resistance you will find it within spec so don't go by that. Good luck to you & if you want the link to the place I bought my stator just let me know
