This is a discussion on How do I make it do Low 10s within the Motorcycle Racing forums, part of the General Motorcycle Forums category; Originally Posted by deadman I thought the Bird did 10.2 stock, .....sure if your a 5 ft tall 130 lb japanese guy...
Not sure how much its off to be exact. Just that its showing 90 to 95 mph going with the traffic flow on the interstate. Been meaning to take my garmin with me one day to see how much it is off exactly. Do you know if a Speedo Healer is available for an analog speedometer?
hi grant did you go too the street meet , and test your mods
if weather is good tomorrow will go too wednesday drags and have another go at racing my friends blackbird . good luck if your racing on wednesday too
Bike setup:
Akro pipe^
PCIII with map and quick shifter*
lower link in back
straps
gear it a little shorter than stock, like up 3 or 4 in the back from OEM gearing
reduce rear tire air pressure (ask experts what number to run)
That's it. Set up like this, the bike will do proper low 10's with a skilled non-large rider. If I were doing this, I'd save my $ for clutches and tires and just keep at it until I was certain that the limiting factor was the bike and not me.
^NOTE: the Akro isn't the best drag pipe, but it is very good on top, and is also a perfectly good street pipe which you said was an issue (to still be street friendly)
*NOTE: the quick shifter works better if you add a linkage so that you can reverse the shift pattern IMO, but this is somewhat of a personal preference.

Still working on it, limits are rider but having loads of fun learning, have strap, lowering link, PCIII + custom map done, yoshi slip ons, K&N Filter and now shift light, will also through on larger rear, after next time out going to take note of rpm & gear etc to see if I need to go up 1 or 2 at rear, currently 16FR, 44RR.
Unknow if this will help but, i heard something that may help with about a 10 hp increase.... If im wrong please let me know, or let me know if im on the right track... (PLEASE)
I traded my 86 yamaha fazer for my BB, when i did this i was talking to the lead tech about it, he claimed he was able to pollish the carb bore and got a 10 hp increase on a dyno, he said he did something else to the carb and got 12 morem for a total of 22 more hp. If he was not blowing smoke, it may help you reach you'r goal of low tens high nines.
GOOD LUCK!!!!
He's blowing smoke. And it was coming from his crack pipe no doubt.
Yes you can gain hp by enlarging the bores but then you also have to match the intake boot and getting that right is a very time consuming effort that may net a few hp not 10.
You can also lose hp this way.
thanks partsguy i was very curious about that, it sounded to good to be ture. ty for letting me know. im not very bike smart, cars yes. well ty for the info.
I had a 99 with just slip on exhaust and ran a 9.9 so i guess it really depends on the rider and how many times you have tried to race a bird. Once you get the grabby cluth down its not hard to hit low 10's stock......
At 165 lbs and absolutely no drag racing ability what so ever, I was able to run a 10.67 with stock suspension, no straps, Akro 4-1, PC III, Dyno tuned.
I ran with Beondwacko (Adam) a few times and he ran 10.32 on his stock 01 Bird with slip-ons, no tuning and front strapped.
He never could understand why I was not able to run in the low 10's but I can assure you that it was shear lack of ability and fear on my part. I was enjoying myself
at 10.67 and rode my Bird home (45 miles) after 5 passes at the Strip.
Have fun and work on your launch and 60 foot times and you may get to the low 10's without spending much money at all. I would recommend the PC III and a dyno tune and then have at the strip. Add the 4-1 exhaust later and save the bucks for now.
Just my opinion, as an enjoyable slow Bird drag racer!
10.67 isn't slow John. It's actually pfg for the first time!
I remember my first day on the XX,totally stock, discovered what a miserable clutch it has for drag racing.Frustrated as hell, couldn't beat a 10.7x.And this from a guy racing 3 yrs with 300 or so passes on the 600.
I managed 10.43 with the stock pipes later that year.See pic (-----
10.11 with the full system.I weighed 'bout 150-155 then.
Shooting for 9.5's this year, man's gotta have a goal...
Same power as the 10.11,just longer, air shifter and lighter, lower.
