I once (years ago) left it in neutral at the line.Another time I rode around the water box and my brake lever hit the fairing(CBR600) making me drop the bike, that was a classic.

    Do carry on!
Yeah sometimes the times are just not there and the day is a "waste", if an outing on the track is ever a waste!
I strongly believe that when "the thing dont wanna roll right" there is no point in trying to overdo it! You'll probably damage something, worst being yourself..

Yes was certainly one of those nights, put it down to experience I guess. Leaving in neutral would have been a suprise and dropping on track before start, at least it was the 600

I did a stage lane drop a couple of weeks back, pulled up after a run , thought I had put the side stand down, oops, bike started to go over, I managed to hold it just enough to gently lay it over, cushioned the bike with my leg somehow, thankfully heaps of guys around helped me up, was a bit embarsing to say the least, , a couple of little scratches on the mirror was only damage, wont do that again.

I've said that before too.Lowered the XX about 4" in the back, had an inch taken out of the sidestand but bike was pretty vertical still. So I would carefully look for uneven spots to park....one day I come back to the pits and there it is on its side, next week, different track, pulled into staging lanes, stand down, had a look, made sure it wasn't going anywhere, walked away....got 10 feet, over on the right she goes!

So now it really, really needs a paint job.

And I got another inch taken off the stand.

    Re: DRAG RACING TIPS

Posted some stuff on this thread about my mate's Petros' NOS bird so here comes some more...
We have another race on Sunday. This "customer" is a ZX-14 with what my mate calls "all of the USA" on it.. It also runs some NOS..
So we decided to stick a new tyre on the bike for the race and take her for a lil practise run.. She run perfect on last outing so it was a "why not?" kinda thingy..
So on went the new Shinko, followed by us loading the van and going to our "race track" for some testing...
The bike run horrible! So much that we were completely baffled!
    Like WTF!
On to the van and back to the shop, nothing looked out of place. New NOS in the bottle (went and actually got a whole ne 12kg bottle refill), new plugs on, everything checked and back on the van and out on the "strip" again.
Same. No difference. So back in the van and back at the shop.
Now we are stripping the fairings off, opening up the engine covers, plugs out again and general frantic wrenching..
Then it hit me. We are using a Dyna 2000, which has got a wire that you have to ground when you get in the nos, which is done by the throttle switch.. We have been driving that through a relay. Hey relays get stuck, dont they?
So off I went to get a new relay and on it went, bike back together, on the van again and out on the "track".
She run great! We even tried her with a 4 degree retard, instead of the usual 8 we run, but it was getting the motor on the "tight" side toping out at 11k rpm. So back it went on 8 degrees and she now cleans through the rpms perfect, all the way to the 12,5k limiter. And all of this on pump 100ron gas. We had some Q16 (116 octane) with us to try with the 4 degrees retard, but this will happen tomorrow, as it was getting dark and we had to head to the shop.
So here's a couple of horrible vids from me mobile, I promise to get some better ones when we go racing on Sunday.

    YouTube - elvetost's Channel

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2T0fuzPSFK0

I really think the ZX has got no chance! I really do! Its even funnier when they believe the same too.. Haha!

Oh yeah! And that relay! Guess what! It was a genuine bmw item! Our electricial, part of the team, works for bmw ... No wonder it failed....

Good luck with the 14, hope you guys sort him out, is amazing how the smallest thing can play up and cause so much frustration, damm BMW parts. The bike looks great in the vid, but only the first link works, need to see this one running,

    Re: DRAG RACING TIPS

Sorry about the vids. I actually did check them when I posted this and they were working..
Weird huh! I edited the post with the refreshed links, but they are all in my channel anyways, so have a look!

Anyways, we had more trouble in paradise today, but its all good, the team grows character from these!
This morning we decided to test it against a mates busa (2010 one, zorst, pc5, K&N on it..), as this is out benchmark test as we know what the other bike can do..
The bike run great for a while!
On N/A (no nos)runs we were easily 4-5 bike lengths in front, at 400m, from start to finish.
On NOS our bike just dissapearred, doing a 100m+ opening on the busa.. The bike run great...for another run..
Then it decided to start slipping very hard. Like something was wrong. We decided on one last pass, one that we should have not done. She was sick and she needed some attention..
Anyways, last run, the clutch exploded.
Yes that's right, it just exploded...

Back on the van she got and back to he shop we headed. I made a little stop at mines and grabbed my old clutch assembly (basket, discs etc, everything that came out of project newbird).
We tore her down (engine off in 20 mins!!!, opened up within the hour, inspected, cleaned and reassembled in another hour or so..) and found an amazing amount of shrapnel and swarf in the motor!
WTF!!!! Apparently the clutch basket did not like our setup very much after 3 years of constant abuse, so it just let go...
Ha! I found metal shavings even in the head!!!!\
AMAZINGLY nothing else besides the clutch assembly got damaged! Like NOTHING at all!
The pistons/rods/head/bearings and shells were unmarked!!! The oil pick up in the sump was blocked off with metal shavings etc 100%. Took me 10 mins to clean that!
I am really proud of our team of mates. We done well. On a phonecall we had 4 people working on the bike and maybe another 10 jumped in and out, to bring ciggies, food (gyros) and beer! You cant ask for more from a group of low income guys, that spend part of their drink money to support this project, myself included! It makes this that much more fun..
We finished the bike around 12 o'clock, had some ciggies and food and we had to take her out for a test run!
You may have noted that there are no lights on the bike and it really is not meant to be run at night, on public highways.. But we had to see what we done with her..
SO loaded her up on the van, took her to a piece of lighted highway, with no real traffic and let her rip..
Oh yeah, I forgot to say that we swere so pissed that we been having the trouble that in the process, we erm... drilled out the nos injectors too! Hehe! Should be running around 320whp on nos now..

She run great. Like really really good!
We shall be doing some more testing tomorrow morning and then we are off to meet the ZX later in the day. Ther eis a chance the race may be postponed for wednesday, as they been having some troubles too, but we are more or less ready to go!
Will post some pics in a mo, when I have a quick shower, as I stinks.. LOL

    Cheers guys!

    Re: DRAG RACING TIPS

Ok and here are some pics...

Oh, btw, Gaz, not a torque wrench in sight man!!!
We did the rods up ar I told you, "as tight as you can", same with the head bolts too..
This is what feeling and experience gives you. An inbuilt torque wrench in your arm, one that will never fail and will never need calibrating.
After all these guys have been running nos and turbo motors for more years than I can claim on this planet and despite having seen almost any damage imaginable and some you could not have thought of, they still never had problems with bolts untorquing or such damage..

On the first piccie (from yesterday) the guy with the red shirt is my mate Petros, and the guy wrenching is Kostas, the rider and mech.
    Cheers!

Have to admire your dedication to get it up and running again, good team work, beers always help get things done. Was it original clutch that let go, lucky the crap did not damage anything, did the 14 turn up for a run

No, no run with the 14 yet. The weather is crap too (raining), so it will be another day..
Bike is still not 100%. We done some more testing today and seem to have put the finger in it.
We shall. Just waiting for the crappy weather to clear!

    Re: DRAG RACING TIPS

Yeap that was on a stock clutch outer. Billet one will be ordered soon...
Well, another day, another engine rebuild!
The bike still felt low on power, so we decided to go through the motor again.
This time we mic-ed the pistons up. Apparently due to the high NOS we are runninng they...erm... shrunk!!! They were supposed to be 81mm ones, but they miced up at 80,2mm...
    ROFL
So out went the JE's (I thought they were wisecos) and in went a new set of wisecos...
Bike is right on money again, ready to tear the 14 apart...Hehe!
That is after another 5 hour mad rebuild session and another nighter test session.
    But we are pleased!

    Re: DRAG RACING TIPS

Oh she is sorted now! She runs strong!
The zx has absolutely no chance!
Tested it against the turbo busa we run before and she is 10% quicker! Easily!
