Hello all,
I am looking at buying an XX. It is at a dealership in AZ that I have done a LOOOOOT of business with and I have a trusting relationship with the Sales Manager. OK the bike and price...
2002 Model (looks all stock) ... It has 8200 Miles and it runs out good on the lot. They are asking $4995 for it. They told me they put a new shield on it and re-covered the seat. It has 2 scratches through the clear coat on the tank but not past the base coat. They are about 2" and 3" each. The tail section in the very back tip has some scarring and is cracked (minor) and the cracks are about 2" each (2 of them) ... There is some scratching in this area as well... I was at first thinking (stunted bike and it came back too far and rubbed the tail) but there is no other signs of damage on the fairings. Service manager said his opinion is it was a soft impact, but to me it looks like it tagged the ass-end on a wheelie...
I priced a new tail section at servicehonda.com and it's $323 ... Looks like that's about all I would want to fix along with the tank scratches...
I have no idea if this is a "normal" deal or if it's a excellent deal ... I am 38 and have cheap insurance on my other 2 bikes so I don't think insurance cost will be a gripe for me ...
Anyways guys, give me some advice ... I look at this as an investment without having to cough-up $10K + for a newer liter bike ... That will depreciate big time the first year ... I have ridden V-maxes, CBR's, FZ700's, and have a VTX for the wife and I for riding 2-up ... My dream machine has always been the FJ1300R or ST1300 but I am not up to spending that kind of dough if I can get a low mileage XX ...
Should I jump on it or should I wait it out for a nicer one? Bikes right now in Phoenix are rising in demand and price with $4 gas ...
Thanks for your responses in advance ... dez

G'day from Oz.
Hopefully more Arizonian (???) members will let you know about the prices in your area.
Check the fairings and plastics for signs of distress caused by a hard landing on the front wheel. The blackbirds are pretty much bulletproof if they are maintained.
To me, it sounds like a good deal.

Yeah it sounds ok. I wouldn't part with much more money than that for it. Get someone that knows a fair bit about bikes to have a look at it before you part with your hard earned. Good luck

How rare are the 2002 silver versions? Honestly this is BUSA country around here and I don't think I have ever heard of a Blackbird ... Only BUSAS and ZX14's ...
Is this a popular bike for the stunters? How else could the tail tip get buggered/cracked?
I really want to jump on it because it's low miles, but I am afraid it has been abused. I just don't know what to look for ... Or if I should even be worried ... $4995 I am told is because they have had it for a while and want to unload it ... Maybe they are just not popular?
Heck that's why I am posting on this site lol ... |

Your delaing with salesman my friend. They will tell you whatever you want to hear to sell the thing. Always keep that in mind. The old saying of you get what you pay for certainly rings true here.

Welcome from the windy city. You mentioned that your dream bikes were the FJ1300 and the ST1300. Both of those bikes lean more towards the Touring side then the sport side when compared to the XX. The XX is a Sport tourer with more of a sporting side to it. The XX are not real common bikes for stuntahs. You can pull wheelies on them but the Linked Braking system is not big with the stunting crowd. Based on your description it sounds like a good buy even if you have to get a tail section. The XX is an excellent tourer. Its different then the FJ1300 and the ST1300. Both of those models come with bags. There are plenty of good bag options available for the XX. The FJ and ST would have more leg room for rider and passenger if you are going two up.

Sounds like a good deal for an '02 with that many miles.
If you know the guy pretty well let him know that you will hold HIM personally responsible if the thing goes to crap !
And as for the 'Bird being used as a stunt bike ? ........ Never heard or seen anything like such ! ....... I think it's weight would exclude any serious stunt work !
Good luck with the purchase ............ you won't be disappointed.
I test rode an FJR and an ST1300A when I bought my new 'Bird and this is my opinion .....
1-FJR felt sure and comfortable ....... but the price was not reflective of the bike !
2-ST1300A felt like riding a caravan after the 'Bird and the price was just as 'uncomfortable' as the FJR
3-Honda build quality, ride, performance and price sealed the deal on the XX

I have an '02 Bird and love it. You can't go wrong buying one.
As far as the tail crack did you ever think maybe the guy had the bike in a garage and was trying to turn it around inside and backed it up into something like a bench or wall. (not that I would know about theses things ha ha ha). I got my first little scratch on my Bird doing this.

Agreed with most of the above. "You haven't heard of the BlackBird?????" you say. I think it's a fair price and with low milage it isn't even broken in yet. Have the dealer discount the needed parts and you can cover the tank with a Bagster tank bag. Get as long as a warrenty as they'll provide. Demand new fluids and I think you'll have a fine bike. There's an '01 for sale locally for $8 grand so yours seems a good buy. There is no doubt that you will be more than pleased with the BlackBird. If you have faith in the relationship with the dealer, I also have faith in my dealer, and it pays off with deep discount on parts and clothing, go for it. Not all dealers and salesmen are "crooks". It's a competitive world and relationships count. My opinion. If you don't buy it then we'll have to "kick you ass" off this site.

Never worry about cosmetics too much. There all easy fixes. Just make sure it runs and feels OK. Wish they were that cheap down here in OZ.

You said you're afraid it's been abused.
I've always worked on the theory that: Where there's one - there's always another.
If you're worried about it, look for another one. Trust me - it's not the only one out there.

OK ... Guys I bought it ... I also bought a 2-year powertrain warranty with a $100 deductible for $450 ... Probably don't need it but I felt better and that's fairly cheap ...
I found out that there were 2 additional things of concern ... Front tire is the factory tire and it is surface crazed a bit on the tread face ... The sidewalls are fine ... They put a new tire on back ... Dunlop Sportmax Qualifier ... I am not too crazy about Dunlops ...
I found the right side fork seal leaking and the front tire issue, so they owe me a front tire and they are doing fork seals for me ...
I had to ride the bike about 20 miles home and wow ... what a machine ... It is as smooth as a swiss watch ... and very tractable power ... I have the feeling this is going to be the one that scares my 38 year old arse into sensibility ... hehe ... (NAHHHHHH!!!)
I plan on taking good care of this bike ... OH before I forget ... It was about 110 degrees on the freeway going home on it and the digital gauge was reading in the low 200 degree range ... Is this normal?
What is the normal operating temp range for a 2002 on the freeway and in traffic? ... I started it up today in the lot and let it idle for about 15 minutes and it got up to like 236 ... Fan seemed to kick on at about 210-215 ...
As I recall ...

You'll have to post up some pics when you get a chance. I'm pretty sure that those temps sound normal and that the fan is kicking on at the right time. I'm not an expert on the normal temps but there were some recent posts up about it and that seemed to be the consensus. I think that you will be very happy with your new purchase. Enjoy

Temps sound about right. Fan should kick in around 100C (212F). The engine will sit at around the 200F mark for normal riding

Yep, that's normal operating temp for the 'bird. In winter it sits on 80C when on the freeway, in summer I'll see 95+C (176F - 203F) and when stopped in traffic in summer expect up to 105C (220F) easy.

I think you did well and your dealer also responded well also. Remember, the search buttom is your friend. You can keep "your ass" on the site now. It's not overly hot on the West Coast of BC so I don't get temp issues. However once, in six years of riding my Bird and 122,000+ kms I'm only had to shut her down once. This was in line waiting to enter West Yellowstone Park. I use Motul coolant, no water wetter of mixes. I've never run Dunlops but most other brands. Now on Pirelli. Cheers. Oh, don't drop her she's expensive to fix.

Congrats on scoring the scoot! "normal operating temp" seems to be a bit of a coin flip. I've put 5,500 miles on my since December and that was a major concern of mine, along with the cam chain tensioner(bad experience on an 87 CBR1000F). Anyway from what I've experienced, In traffic stop and go on a 90 degree day I hit 220-230. Splitting lanes on the way home I get around 200. Clean air and cruising 65-80 MPH she hangs at about 190. I think I would not worry so much if she had a old school cold/warm /hot gauge. Enjoy the ride!! 89A the back way Prescott, Jerome and Oak creek canyon.
