Howdy fellow XXers. I am new to my blackbird (just bought it in Nov) but this site has been a big help (had a R/R go out already, replaced it with an R1 R/R). My last bike was a '85 FJ 1100 which I rode 8 years, so this is a big upgrade for me. Been riding street bikes for about 20 years now. Started out with the great-granddaddy of the XX a mid-seventies (don't remember) CB 750. I keep 'em forever and put on a bunch of miles. Any fellow Texans planning a ride let me know.

OK, That settles it ! ... My 'Bird is only a month old but I'm now looking around for a good second-hand R/R.
It would seem that this item is the 'Bird's weakest link !

It would seem that this item is the 'Bird's weakest link ! | Agreed. My FJ never left me stranded the whole time I owned it, but the BB left me on a busy freeway, in the left lane, in the rain (of course) after less than 60 days. The bike only had 24K mi on it when I bought it.
I went ahead a bought a new R/R from Yamaha for a 2001 R1 and it fit my 97 bird just about perfect (a little whittling with a rat tail file lined up the holes nicely). It was half the price of the OEM Honda R/R and I was able to find a dealer that had one in stock (Honda didn't). I did have to buy longer bolts (I just bought the from Yamaha since I was there) because the Yamaha R/R is a little bulkier than the OEM.
I wired it up using standard crimp terminals, then I potted the whole connector with 5 Minute Epoxy. I just taped up the latch hole, and filled in the connector well with the epoxy. I figured if it happens again, I'll just cut the harness again and repeat the process. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.
By the way... what exactly is vegimite? I've always wondered.

Sorry to hear about the hassles at only 24K Miles !
It'll be all good from here though
Good bit of modding on the Yammy R/R .... pretty handy ! Keep us posted on how it performs !
.... And vegemite ? ..... I'll let you do a search on this forum .... be afraid, be very afraid

It would seem that this item is the 'Bird's weakest link ! | Dont worry too much about the 07 R/R. They are enormous compared to the pre 03 units, with the extra size mostly attributed to the cooling fins.

Although as a former one of (U)ncle (S)am's (M)isguided (C)hildren, I have rarely been accused of having a discerning pallet... especially when it comes to anything relating to beer.

I don't remember the name of the place, but I remember going all the way to Lockhart (I'm pretty sure) from Austin for lunch... and I wasn't disappointed. Am I right?

Am I right? | Dude, Lockhart is the BBQ capitol of Texas. We have Krietz, Chilsom Trail, Blacks, and Smitty's for your choosing and never ride through Lockhart on a motorcycle hungry because you smell the fire pitts burning all through town.
I would also be saying your answer is no.... you weren't disapointed.
Ride on down my way and I will treat you to lunch and a ride towards the hill country if you like. Im trying to get those Austin and Round Rock boys down this way too. I will try to put something together in March when things get back to normal weather wise.

Definitely. I just got back from Dallas (for work - wouldn't do it voluntarily) and it was windy as hell. Got lucky with the temp both ways though. These 'birds ride great on the highway but I can't wait to try mine out in some hills. March sounds about right to me.
