Thanks for all the great info on this thread guys. I thought I was looking at a camchain replacement, but I've just nipped to the shop and picked up a replacement lifter set. It's not the same as the ones mentioned here I suspect it's the original. 1430 Baht, about 45 dollars.

Just waiting for it to cool down before I change it.

Do we hear this noise always at 3-4k? or just on the deceleration side or the acceleration side?

I heard something similar to what you're describing on my redbird, but it only seems to sound like "marbles" on the deceleration side (when I use the copious amounts engine drag to slow down)

I just ordered a new lifter set from john, (along with a couple other things)
but it seems a bit early for this problem (just over 11k on my bike)

The Honda service manual says to turn the tensioner shaft fully clockwises prior to removing the CCT. If you don't have the stopper tool, what do you do and what can you use instead of the stopper tool??

Hi everyone,

I have exactly the same symptoms in my -99 with 22000km. The rattle sound doesn't exist in steady 2000-4000rpm, only when decelerating. Could this be something else, maybe some resonance from fairing, cooler etc? I surely hope so. Well I've already ordered new CCT, so I'll try it first.

I got similar problems as well, well i didnt bother at all until i read about the cct changing and ...
mine '03 22000km bird started to make a tiny rattle sound at idle and when going up to 4000 the rattle just increases, speen only i guess (cos i cant hear proper at that rpm )
but from my previous bikes ( 900RR, srad, R1 ) i know for a fact that they automatically (somehow :S) adjust the tension on cam chain. And rattle sound almost always disappear after 1~2k kms..
they got like a spring system in their cct's and got about 10-15 clicks, i think, every click makes tension harder etc. And all my bikes had CCT's in a very very difficult place to reach.
So one starts to wonder, does BB automaticly adjust tension, or you just need to replace, every 20k kms or so?
I never replaced in any of my bikes by the way...

Also Jaska, when you're decelerating, does the front seems to shake as well? it could well be brakes rattling, or disc surface unstable.
By the way shame on terasbetoni, really liked the song

Yeah, you're talking about finland and eurovision contest, they don't make a good match!

The CCT however, I think it should be fully automatic also in BB. I explained wrongly in my previous post, the rattling sound is present when just revving the engine at neutral. Sound is gone when opening throttle but appears immediatly when RPM starts to drop. Sounds just like some resonance... Weird. Brakes are fine.

hmm, can it be the clutch? does the sound goes away when you squeeze the clutch lever? if so, then nothing to worry at all.. 9 in 10 bikes* have the same problem

Clutch has no effect to the noise, I've checked that too. I think the best way to solve the mystery is to take off fairings and listen, does the noise come from engine at all.. And I must admit, it doesn't sound like serious failure, just some little rattling. But I MUST be sure, guess I'm little paranoid.. Compared to my old kawasaki, this one is quiet as a mouse..

Got my CCT & keyring today and it only took a week!! I'm sure that if I'd ordered the CCT from a local dealer, it would had taken a month with double price.. Now I'll get my hands dirty!

My bird started to make that rattle around 2k rpm. You can start it up and there is the rattle. So I will be pming john to get the cct. I called the local mechanic in my area to listen to the bike and he said that he is backed up a full week with bikes to be fixed. I am not that mechanically inclined, but am willing to get the job done. Even if I have to pay someone to do it. So wish me luck guys. Help is also appreciated. Especially help from south Jersey and Philly.

It is an easy do it yourself job even for the mechanically challenged.

Invest the 45 minutes to do it yourself and develop a strong bonding relationaship with your Bird in the mean time !!

Well, the new CCT is now installed and the rattling sound decreased but didn't entirely disappear. There's still little rattle when giving throttle, but I guess that's normal.. By the way, the replacement was really easy thing to do.

Are you talking about using a Kaw ZX-11 cam chain tensioner instead of the Honda part? I got that impression, but the pic is showing the part on a Honda parts bag. Please clarify. Also, I read one post elsewhere with concern regarding the tension amount of the zx-11 tensioner. More pressure?? More wear on the guide? Thanks.

By the way. My cct went out all at once; instant nasty noise. Very quite prior.

Just replaced the CCT Lifter. All buzzing at the 3-4k range GONE!

On a side note, shifting seems better/tighter. Could this be related?

My mechanic tells me that a new auto tension lifter (cct) does not always fix the problem. He leans toward a manually adjusted tensioner, involving a full check of the cam chain to make sure it hasn't stretched / inspection of other internals. This was an "all of a sudden" thing for me and it made a very distinct noise as soon as it happened. I'm reading here that others have had a long lasting noise....at certain rev ranges. I'd rather throw a new lifter in and be done with it, but I don't want to miss something either. Comments please. Thanks.

Hi guys.I have 30k milage. So is it worth to change tensioner only or cam chain too.I did 350 miles over weekend and now engine gives some quiet hits sounds.I think it is tensioner or chain.So my question is what do first?I could not find any info in xx manual when cam chain must be changed.
I wnt to some shop today after long trip and noise just gone.So can xx give some noises after very long trip or maybe is better change this tensioner?Thanks.

Get a new CCT from Jaws, they are not that expensive. Does not take that long to fit. That'll tell you whether you need to look further at the cam chain in the future.

man all I have to say you guy are the SH&*!!!

For someone who is scared of anything that has to do wit a wrench you guys provided excellent feedback on the problem with my new 97 XX. The process took me about a half hour and that was taking off the plastic( I know you didn't have to but I had the crap allens and just figure since I am clueless is was just better off) Oh and guess what no more buzzing at 3-4grand RPM Wo ho I can fix something

I would like to take this time and give John great props for very fast delivery(I order the parts on sat and in my mailbox on Monday

Now all I have to do is figur out how to install helis Bars and the Vista Throttle lock and I am good to go

well I just ordered mine and install was fairly smooth. I took the key out before install.
whoops!!!
Got a small screw driver and wound it back up and put the key back in place.
Installed the cct and cranked it up. Sounds great.

What tool are you guys using to "torque" with allen keys?

I simply use a socket that has an allen key built into the end of it. I get mine from the local Sears Craftsman store.
