All right, Guys (and gals)
This may have been done before, but I'll ask it again.
Living where you do, what would you consider your favorite road, for a Sunday morning jaunt? The time of year would be pretty neat to know as well.
I'll start,
For me, my favorite road would have to be Ranch Road 337, from Vanderpool to Leakey, Texas. This particular stretch of road is about 50 miles to my West, about 45 minutes away. The road is chock full of slow to medium speed turns. The scenery is awesome as well. Vanderpool, TX - Google Maps
For me, the best time to ride this road is in October/November, or in February/March.
There 50 other roads in my riding region that I could name, but I am trying to stick to one road per rider/region initially.
Okay,
Who's next?

Honestly, I have yet to find my favorite piece of tarmac. Ain't been ridin long enough! Have to travel out of the city more and do some explorin! Favorite time would have to be a cool summer morning.

There is state forest about 20 miles away. Its loaded with twisties of varying elevations. I've never seen anything resembling a copper there. There is one road around a pond that is exactly one mile around. It's a one way. In the spring around late March early April when the place is deserted it is a race track. It is a blast. You can get around it in well under a minute. Pure fun!!!

On a saturday it would be Pakenham - Marysville and return (too many cops pulling over EVERY bike in the Black Spur on sundays). Also Grantville - Wonthaggi (via Almurta) - Leongatha and then down the Strzlecki Hwy and turn off to Thorpedale/Trafalgar and return.

If I don't mind slabbing it for an hour, I'll ride up the Fraser Canyon, #1 it's a 650 return run but you don't have to go all the way up. The road to Whistler is being rebuilt to four lanes but too many rcmp. From Vancouver one really has to leave town to get a good ride in.

...ok ...here's my favorite sunday ride in range of 200 km's from athens at parnassos mountain....one of the earlier videos i 've shot using my handmade mobile stand mounted at the back on the handlebar...many vibrations but i did my best assuming that i had a slightly deformed tyre and a rear shock that washn't cooperating in any mean...the prototype is way mych better but way much larger for a video server (180 mb)...hope you enjoy it as i did... I was looking at this one earlier. The pavement looks a little weather beaten, but I'll tell ya brother....thats my kind of road. Nice looking country you have there.

thanx lois...the whole area landscape is a combination of valleys and several peaks with twistie roads..wish we had better asphalt also...although the video came out a lot shaken...the music in a evil way fitted great especially when i pass the shady part of the mountain the music track goes to encore and the poor mobile camera starts to flutter...it looks like a speed nightmare...!... |

Not many good roads here in SW Florida. The ones that are decent are going to be my secret so none of you squids show up and ruin them for me. That goes double for the XX's that aren't silver. Nothing worse than trying to get past those things clogging up the roads. |

I had a stress day two weeks ago. I jumped on the bike and went to the Georgia mountains. ( The ones without Russian Tanks )
What I found is I can do a 600 mile day on the bird.
So now my favorite roads are my favorite Sunday ride roads.
HWY 60 into Suches, HWY 180 out. 129 down to 19 for the loop or hwy 75 to the Richard Russell.
This should be even easier once I get the Audiovox cruise control installed.

I ride whenever I can, but there are two times a year when I ride the same road - Highway 12 in Utah. I ride it the weekend after Memorial Day and again the weekend after Labor Day. I avoid the traffic and get great rates on hotel rooms. Also on the yearly agenda, Highway 89 to see my folks for the 4th of July.

I toured and camped throughout Utah and I loved it. Moab, back in the 80's was funky. I'd love to go back on my Bird. All those canyon roads, omg, it must be heaven. What's the best month, bc I went in late Sept/Oct. I miss my old 72 Westphalia, with the porche over-bore kit, etc.

Utah, if it's been a wet year, is best in June. If it's been dry, end of April first of May works OK. Same holds true for fall, wet year go early - dry year you can get almost to November. (Halloween is usually my cutoff for long trips.)
Moab is bloated now with Jeeps, mountain bikers, rafters, tourists, etc. Still beautiful and funky but no bargains.

New Zealand is blessed with some amazing scenary & roads to boot, but one that stands out & one most bikers here do on any given Sunday is the Coromandel loop @ 200km from start to finish of twisting roads so you can throw the bird around.....or if you feeling a bit more tour orientated Northland is always good, just came back from there the other week @ 1250km for the day |

The roads around here are beat to heck and its flat and straight mostly. I like SHeridan road north of Lake st. in the fall but its not a speed route. The Northwest part of the state of Illinios gets a little funner.

Strek.......I'm less than 9 hours from you.....why don't you come down and ride the twisties here, then I'll shoot up and we can grab a couple of beef sandwiches, a pizza and some Chicago hot dogs, or Vice-Versa?

I've made it in 7.5 at a straight 85mph, hard to do but it can be done. A CB radio is the best ECM device for smokys. Leaves will peak around mid to 3/4 through October. Keep it on your radar.
