It's common around here for the price to jump all over the place. Holiday and long weeked price gouging seems to be the norm. I've got the Factory Pro 4 degree ignition advancer to install. Now I'm not so sure that's a good idea as it will also limit my fuel octane requirements to better fuel grades with the resulting higher prices. Hmm...what to do? Install it anyway of course. Minium octane via the manual for my 1998 XX is 86 pump octane. I ran 86, 87, 89 octane last Sept in the Smokies and did not notice any ill effects. Running higher octane then required (putting flame suit on here as I type) is a waste of money if the engine does not require said octane. Octane chat is always a good way to lose friends...or gain enemies.
Tony | Very odd in my manual it says running anything less than 90 Octane will damage the engine, makes me think that in europe the compression ratio is either higher or the ignition is advanced more in the ECU. Our fuel choices are 95 or 98...in France you can get lower ratings but I've not seen below 90.

I'll double check my on bike owners manual for my 1998 XX, but I'm sure I read 86 octane as a minimum. As noted in one of the earlier replys. "not all country's read octane by the same means". Euro gasoline vendors (and Oz) tend to use RON (research octane number) I believe (?) as the advertised unit of octane rating. In the U.S. and Canada PON (pump octane number) is what we purchase by. PON= RON+MON/2. MON is motor octane number. So we use an average of RON and MON to arrive at PON here in North America. A rule of thumb is that RON may be as much as eight to ten points higher then MON. So if your running your low 90 RON number your not that far off my PON number really. The diff between the testing to arrive at RON versus MON is that the MON number is the result of testing the fuel in a "motor under loaded" conditions, with a Knock Engine...or at conditions that attempt to mimic a motor that is actually doing work as you might find while out on the road. The RON is a similar test with a Knock Engine, but does not place as high a load on the motor so the knock threshold is higher. In a manner of speaking the diff is akin to being at cruise speed and hearing no ping or knock (this would give you a RON) and then jumping on the gas pedel to pass and hearing all the ping and knock as the motor is loaded up to do more work with a low octane fuel. There is more to it then that..but it may help you related to the diff between the two numbers in a sense. At the refinery we blend fuel to octane spec's based on Knock Engine testing. The Knock Engines have adjustable compression ratio's and timing adjustments that enable both RON and MON numbers to be arrived at.

87 Octane was $1.21 minus 3.5 cents at Chevron yesterday afternoon. It's a rollercoaster b/c they play with the price weekly. On Thursday I paid $1.11 per litre of 87 Octane. I expect to pay $1.50 or so during the summer. In '02 when I bought my Bird I paid 87 cents per 87 Octane. If you live outside the Metro Vancouver area it's 10 cents less. We also pre-pay at the pumps as a result of server incidents with "gas and dash". One kid was killed trying to chase a thief. Too many thiefs and "crack heads" in Vancouver these days.

Tony | Yes 95 RON is approx 87MON so my manual 90 RON would be approx 82 MON..must be getting my MON's & RON's confused |

Last week I payed $1.52 per litre for BP Ultimate. 2 hours later, that price had gone up to $1.67 per litre. The price is due to go up again and again and again over the next few weeks.

Ireland weighs in at
€1.20/litre or €4.63/US Gallon ($1.91/litre or $7.38/US Gallon)
With my commute (Serious heavy filtering, no freeways/motorways and about 50 traffic lights over a 10 mile run - Yes driving in dublin is an experience to be had) I'm hitting reserve after 120miles (200kms) and it costs me €20 ($32) to fill her up!!
But, if i wanted fuel economy i would have bought a Honda 50!

You don't need premium. 87 Octane will do. Today, $126.9 per litre and expect $150 by summer time. In '02 when I bought the Bird, it was .86 a litre. Get used to it.

Compression isn't high enough in our engine to require Higher octane. High octane in a lower copression engine will produce less power and not burn as clean. I have seen dyno runs and engines that didn't need the higher comp. lost HP when feed high octane fuel. People think that higher octane means more power; wrong, it simply is more stable under compression.

Haven't seen that price since last year... I ride about 450miles a week on my bird, with maintenance, fuel and insurance its almost cheaper to ride BART into the city. Then my commute would'nt be so much fun |

obviously a topic close to all our hearts... this thread's probably generated more responses than any other in a fairly short period of time...
the equivalent of $ 1.25/lt for 87 oct and $ 1.50/lt for the good stuff here in Mumbai, India.

Fuel Cells ???
What we need is accelerated development of Dilithium Crystals or a Flux Capacitor

I am in New York about 70 miles north of the Big City (NYC) and premium 93 octane is running around $3.90 a gallon. Damn taxes are killing us . I work close to the NY/NJ border and pop over to get gas in New Jersey it is 30 to 40 cents cheaper a gallon due to less taxes .
