Sandsquidxx, I have noticed a mileage and slight power increase in mid grade fuel over regular and premium unleaded. But that was in my 50cc scooter!

So, should I trade my BB for a scooter?NOT I average 33mpg, and thats 90% freeway commute. With gas prices getting so high its a wash when it comes to ridding the BART train. Thats Bay Area Rapid Transit for all you non SF bay area riders, but then my commute goes from 40min to 1.5hours each way Then the fun factor drops to zero....

Now about the regular fuel I run, not sure yet. But from what some of you riders say, I may just go back to premium at $4.20gal.

Public transport is just no fun and I'd rather put in the overtime at work ... cause I don't get paid sittin' on a train.
It's also the quality of life. I get more time with my family.
On train it is 4 hours a day wasted .... on the bike it's 1 hr 40 mins of grinning

Talk about getting screwed. Having a quick bite to eat at a servo on my way to Willobank Drags yesterday afternoon and watched the pleasantly plump console operator change the unleaded fuel price from 125.9c/litre to a rip off 138.9c/litre with a quick flick of a few number boards. How easy it seems to make a quick buck at out expense. But then the weekend is coming up but the powers to be reckon that there is no price fixing by the oil companies.
Yeah right - I believe in the easter bunny too!

On the really really rare occasions where the price of crude has gone down, the oil companies took weeks to pass on the savings. But when crude goes up, the pump price goes up within the space of a couple of minutes !!!!

The Below rant is to do with fuel in Australia in Australian dollars.....
What really pisses me off is that crude is traded in US$ and although it has gone up in US$, it has not gone up that much in AU$ (on account of the strengthening australian dollar). So the effect in AU$ at the pump should not be as much as it has been. That is even though the US$ buys less oil, the AU$ buys more US$, hence evening out the equation somewhat.
On top of that (in round figures, I dont have the time to do all of the research) when fuel was 0.70/l it had about $0.40/l of tax on it (as a flat rate, not a percentage) so the cost of refined fuel was about $0.30/l, with fuel at $1.50, it still has about $0.40 (not factering GST) so the price of refined fuel is $1.10. So fuel has really gone up by about 270% even though crude oil has really gone up about 25% (in australian dollars).
Can anybody explain this to me?

It's funny reading all the replies from US & Aussie members of the forum and how you're being ripped of, I know the distances are greater etc but consider this if I goto work (35 miles by train) it costs me USD 10.00 to park at the station which is 5 miles away, then its USD 45.00 for the train fare...so in a month it would cost me about USD 1000.00 to use public transport. Therefore we put up with the USD 20.00 it costs me in fuel (about 1.8 gallons)...and Shell / BP made 10's of billions profit last year...arrrgghhhhh..who's laughing they are at us in Europe

Blimey, 33mpg (is that an imperial gallon?) I've never averaged under 38mpg even when cruising at 100+ in europe with the bird, funnily enough though I managed 25 mpg on my VTR1000 once ran out of fuel just as I got to the garage...

Fuel here just jumped a couple days ago from US$3.39 to US$3.69/gal for premium. If prices break $4.00/gal by October (I'm betting they will), then prices will have more than doubled in 2 years. Some thing just doesn't seem right about that

Doubled in 2 years, and you're still less than half the price...Still we'll be riding electric bikes in 30 years time!!

reg runs anywhere from 3.19 to 3.39 for regular, and 3.49 to 3.69 for premium per gallon here in northeast ohio right now...

my caddi cannot run on anything less than midgrade (pings like a box of empty bottles) and it runs best on premium...

do the birds require premium?

It looks like AntXXG has got us all beat. The train for me to San Francisco is only USD 10.50 round trip and USD 1.0 to park in the lot.
As for my fuel consumption, I believe its the additives they put in the fuel that causes the problems here in CaliforniaRidding the BB just saves me commute time now that fuel has gone up so much. Here in California we can lane splitandthe San Francisco Bay Bridge $4.00 toll is free during commute hours. When traffic is backed up for two hours by car it only takes me 10min to cross the bridge.....

Tuesday afternoon my wife askes, "You going to fill your truck up? ...gas is going up tomorrow?" Normally I miss the cheap gas and get stuck paying the higher price. Well on Tuesday I managed to fill for $0.98 a liter for regular (86 octane). By Tuesday evening the price jumped to $1.10 a liter for regular. It's common around here for the price to jump all over the place. Holiday and long weeked price gouging seems to be the norm. I've got the Factory Pro 4 degree ignition advancer to install. Now I'm not so sure that's a good idea as it will also limit my fuel octane requirements to better fuel grades with the resulting higher prices. Hmm...what to do? Install it anyway of course. Minium octane via the manual for my 1998 XX is 86 pump octane. I ran 86, 87, 89 octane last Sept in the Smokies and did not notice any ill effects. Running higher octane then required (putting flame suit on here as I type) is a waste of money if the engine does not require said octane. Octane chat is always a good way to lose friends...or gain enemies.

Tony

Got to agree with you on the 'bird Tony. I've always run mine on 91 octane without any bother and continue to do so. The only time I use 96 is if 91 isn't available. Whether it affects horsepower is debatable but largely irrelevant for road use anyway.

Cheers,

Geoff

Same price in Sweden when we import from Norway, and don't need to invest in oil-riggs and labour

No they don't require premium.
But I run mine on 98 RON BP Ultimate exclusively.
Found engine runs smoother, faster and longer.
I get about 20 klms extra out of a tank of PULP.
