Honda motorcycles says "Adiós!" to American production

Just pulled this off another bike forum.... dunno how accurate it is, but it seems likely enough, the way Honda motorcycles has been going the last 5-7 years....

TO: HAM and EGA Associates
FROM: Akio Hamada, HAM President and CEO PLEASE READ MMP to Cease Production in Spring 2009. Please read entire text below.

PLEASE POST
This morning I made a very important and difficult announcement to our fellow associates at the Marysville Motorcycle Plant.

Beginning in spring 2009, Honda will consolidate the Marysville Motorcycle Plant production at a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Kumamoto, Japan.

As you may remember, Honda made a similar announcement in 2006 to consolidate motorcycle production from the Hamamatsu plant in Japan to Kumamoto. The purpose of these consolidation efforts is to strengthen the competitiveness and appeal of Honda products by applying advanced technologies.

Out of respect to our associates and those impacted by this announcement, I wanted to share this news as soon as possible. We are currently evaluating how we will proceed with this direction. But I want to assure you that MMP associates will remain an important part of the HAM team. There will be no layoffs.

In the past, many people have identified themselves as motorcycle associates, or auto plant associates, or engine associates. But the one very important thing for all of us to remember is that we are one team. A team of dedicated and committed Honda associates whose number one objective is to satisfy our customers.

We will share with you more details as they become available. Thank you and have a safe day.

I guess the more things change the more they stay the same. I'll post this on my local Harley forum and see what it generates. hehehe

If this true it shows that bean counters and not true businessmen are runnign honda which explains alot. Here's to those Americans who might be losing thier jobs! Here's to those who get a good relocation package to Japan!

Ahhhh yeah, no layoffs <chorttle>

They now call them downsizing, the employees will get a choice of so many months pay based on years of service or a nice moving package to Japan. The latter will be taken by the Japanese managers who were originally brought over and the former will be taken by the local residents.

See this all the time - big write-offs for work force reductions. Basically a payoff to keep the lawyers out and to make management feel good (at the expense of shareholders).

Unfortunately it is true! If you can't dig it up or cut it down, we don't have it anymore.

OK, in your opinion what would a "true" businessman do? If by "bean counters" you mean that the plant shutdown and move back to Japan was motivated by the potential to either make more money or reduce loss, then both a true businessman and a bean counter would have to see the logic in that.

Having worked for both American and Japanese companies I would have to say that loyalty to employees is FAR stronger in the Japanese companies. You will also NEVER see the Japanese executives taking bonuses and raises despite their division or company doing poorly. The executives are also the first to take pay cuts before the employees.

If you have ever been to Japan you can witness first hand what an efficient, productive, clean and orderly society they have. Finally, American Honda employs over 120,000 people in the US. This plant shutdown has a negligible effect on their overall workforce and if they say they will re-assign the 400 or so employees, they probably will.

I have both worked for private industry for Japanese and Local concerns and have to agree with you.
The japanese management would never consider an executive pay rise during a lean period.
I'm now in state government and so can give you plenty of examples of waste and executive pork-barrelling.
But I guess everyone knows that already

That is why America will always lag behind the Japanese in production and quality of their goods and services. America cant build a true world class car, bike, or electronics without the worry of business downsizing, outsourcing, relocating, or just about anything else. We will never be as efficient as the japanese. It would seem that America has given up or just cant get it done.
