The attached pdf document is from one of my old magazines, Cycle World, April 1978 issue. CD Bohon wrote the article and must have done a lot of research. I am not a Harley fan and have never owned one so don't send me poison pen notes. I just think this article is very interesting in that the Harley and Davidson team went to Japan to teach the Japanese to build a successful motorcycle, after the Japanese had tried for several years and could not come up with a really good, dependable working bike. I think you will find it very enlightening for some motorcycle history that you may not have known.

I read the article many years ago and have wondered hundreds of times if we would have the great bikes that we have today, if H-D, had not gone to the rescue of the Japanese motorcycle industry.
