After doing the bike lift, I have come to distrust the sidestand angle on the bike particularly when having weight in the Givi. Rather than welding on a thicker plate on the kickstand or extending the length of the arm, I would like to come up with a slicker solution. I would like to get a hold of someone's extra sidestand and have someone CNC machine a removable 2 piece "spacer shoe" that will be adaptable to the XX sidestand and give us a slightly larger footprint for hot asphalt parking lots.
I hope to be able to have them make additional copies for members who are interested. This is what one of the members on the FJRforum proposed: Skyway's FJR Sidestand Enlargement Footplate - FJR Forum

Two side stands I place a block of wood under the side stand, it raise the bike, lessens the angle and weight on the stand. Good for rough surfaces as well. Only problem I've incountered was one day, on hot newly paved blacktop, when into the motel, owners suggested I go out immediately, and she was sinking into the surface. Freeked me out, but no problems. That's why I carry a small block of wood. It's worked so far with 100,000 kms of touring around N.A. I suppose if the "toe" of the side stand was flatter and larger it would offer some assurances. I guess I'm not into "complicated" solutions to seemingly simple problems. My 2 cents.

I prefer "Elegant" to simple, on occasion.
The real need for this plate is to have it made a 1/2" thick, to allow the bike to sit more upright with the stand engaged and the common 6mm shim installed. The larger footprint is a secondary benefit.
BTW,
I would, of course, strongly suggest having an XX machined on the bottom of the sidestand plate to brand the hot asphalt, just so that we can mark our territory!

I don't lug a block of wood when I ride, when I tour, I bring a 1/2"X3X3, in the tank bag. I'm sure it'd lighter than what you have planned. And what's your plan when your on a softer surface? Or an unpaved surface? It's worked for me for 100,000 kms of criss-crossing the continent. But hey, weld away.

I have one of these sidestand coasters that says HONDA on it and I carry it under my seat with the tool bag. Works great! |

Anyone got an extra sidestand laying around. I may only need it for fabrication purposes and be able to return it. Otherwise I will buy one of a wreck or a new one.
BTW,
I always carry a plastic sidestand puck, too, even though I generally use the centerstand when I park. The main purpose of this 1/2" plate is to keep the bike more upright while getting off the bike (6mm shim, remember) and setting the stand.
I just want to refocus the thread on the primary purpose of this plate.
Are there any machinists on this forum with access to a CNC machine, who may want to make a little extra cash, while earning heaps of international praise and glory from the forum.
Davesxx01, Does this sort of project interest you?

I know someone with a CNC. I sent him a link to this to see what he thinks.
