I think it's a custom. I don't remember the CBX having USD forks back then. The body work and pipe don't look stock either.

I've got three (did frame up rebuilds on two) of these and it's definitly a CBX engine, can't tell what year, looks like a 81 or 82 with a big bore kit.
Yes, six, count'em -- six -- carbs. A bear to sync up but after doing a couple bikes gets easier and worth the time and trouble.
Lots of custom parts on both the engine and frame.

Not much left that's CBX there. Neat looking street fighter though.
it's a "late model" CBX engine though guessing from the black finish.
There were two styles of bikes made '79 and '80 were naked. The '81 and '82 were baggers.

The Honda CBX carbs are not that hard to set up if you have the set of 6 vacuum gauges like I do. Once you have set the vacuum with the Honda long screw driver tool, they don't need much. The valves and carbs only need adjusting every 10-15k or so and as little as I ride at my age, once every couple of years will do it. They are not really a nightmare at all. I have 3 of them and yes, the bike in this photo is an 81 or 82 engine and he probably does have a nightmare due to the mods he has made. All 3 of mine are totally original. cbxjohn@cox.net |

cbxjohn,
Not a bear to set up -- a real bitch, especially the first time!
First remove the seat, then the tank then hook it up to the to the fuel intake. Then place a cooling fan. Then face the crud buildup and old lock tight or whatever Honda used to lock down the adjustment screws not to mention the special tools needed: six gauge setup special wrench special screwdriver. Then fussing with the vacuum port screws and their crush washers (they are non magnetic and a real bitch to retrieve if you should drop one (and you always do) then the adapters and hoses plus figuring out how to get at the adjustments. It goes on and on.
As you say, not required very often, but when it's needed or you want to check it out for the upcoming riding season you spend some time trying to remember "How the hell did I do that the last time?"
A double barreled bitch and a pain in the ass. EFI for me!
Regards, Michael Pavlick

I replaced a float in one carb for a friend of mine back in the mid eighties. It had been sitting up for a while and the #3 float had sunk. Back then the float was $16.00 from Al Rodi Honda (RIP).
When I got everything back together and fired it up, it spewed black goo from the 6 into one D&D pipe all over my 77 Monte Carlo front end. I had to laugh, and the D&D sounded raspy and mean. The perfect thing for the diminutive owner.

I saw one of these in a magazine today and yes it was hacked together using the CBX as a base.....different forks though.
