Oh man that's sad. It hurts just looking at that picture. There was an article in my local newspaper today entitled "distracted motorists". It was about the things that drivers do while driving. They did a nationwide survey and reported that 73% of the drivers polled admitted to talking on a cell phone while driving. Among other things that drivers admitted doing: reading a book or newspaper, shaving, applying make-up, nursing a baby, daydreaming. But get this.....18% of drivers polled admitted that upon arrival at their destination, they did not remember the drive there!!!! That's almost 2 out of every 10 drivers that are totally oblivious to their surroundings.

Be careful out there guys.

I understand the danger involved in doing what gives me the most pleasure in life- riding. I'm big on motorcycle safety, and have read many books. Some of my favorites are Proficient motorcycling, More Proficient motorcycling, Ride Hard-Ride Smart, and of course the Henry Hurt report. (however outdated it may be) That car would have had to been going at least 20-30 mph to slam all the way up to the windscreen. I would assume the bike was stopped. My question would be how would you avoid such a wreck? Sure in the MSF course, and practice on the road has taught me the proper ways of emergency swerving, and braking. But they never really touched on rear-end collisions. They said "Keep an eye on your rear view mirror until the car approaching comes to a stop." That was all. If your at a red light and it's obvious the car approaching is too fast, and there's cross traffic in front... Just drop the clutch and pull to the side? If there is another car in front of you squeeze to the left and let him rear end the car? I guess whatever it would take to get out of the way, that is if you've caught it in time.

It may not have helped in this particular case, but.......... this sure makes a strong case for taillight modulators and Hyperlights!

What about this one from here in Perth Western Australia on 1 dec 06
Quote:
THREE road fatalities, including two motorcyclists, have taken WA's road toll to the worst in five years.

One horror crash saw a rider and his bike dragged under a four-wheel-drive for more than 250 metres before the car stopped.

It is understood the woman driver if the car was reaching for a cigarette and did not see the motorcyclist.

The rider, a 23-year-old man, was mowed down from behind as he rode along Central Ave, in Mt Lawley, at 10.30pm on Friday night.

The impact of the crash caused the crumpled motorcycle to become wedged under the vehicle.

Meanwhile, a 30-year-old motorcyclist died yesterday after suffering serious head and internal injuries after a car ploughed into his motorcycle on West Coast Hwy, North Beach at 8.30pm on Friday.

Police said the car was attempting to turn right into Malcolm St and had turned in front of the motorcycle, throwing the rider and pillion passenger from the bike.

The rider was rushed to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in a critical condition. The passenger was uninjured.

Constable Les Goddard, from the Major Crash Investigation Branch, said both vehicles involved in the Mt Lawley crash had been travelling east on Central Ave when the four-wheel drive rear-ended the motorcycle, dragging both the rider and bike under.

"From the trail of debris and body matter on the road we know he was dragged along,'' Constable Goddard said.

The four-wheel drive came to rest 400m from the point of impact, on the wrong side of the road.

The driver, a 33-year-old woman, was taken to Royal Perth Hospital suffering shock.

Waitress Dior Adamson had been driving home from work when she was forced to change lanes to avoid a head-on crash.

"The four-wheel drive came straight towards me,'' Ms Adamson said.

"I thought: `They've run over a box or something' but then I saw a body on the ground.''
Quote:
I simply can not believe the excuse for the Mt Lawley accident is "the woman driver of the car was reaching for a cigarette and did not see the motorcyclist". How the hell can you go from being (presumably) a safe distance behind another vehicle to mowing them down after being 'distracted' for a few moments... just doesn't add up...

Unless "reaching for a cigarette" was actually more like grabbing her handbag off the passenger seat, taking her eyes off the road to rumage through the handbag for the ciggies, meanwhile checking the mobile phone for messages, then any missed calls, then finding that missing ear ring, then grabbing the flip-top pack of ciggies, struggling to open the pack with just one hand so takes both hands off the wheel and then goes through the handbag again to find the lighter - no not that one, that ones empty, the lighter that works, (click click) yep that's the one, now to light the ciggie...
Crunch
And then not even stop when the 4wd would have to have been struggling to proceed forward in a straight line along with a hell of a lot of noise and vibration...
That's manslaughter, not an accident.

Interesting viewpoint he has. I have to agree with one point though. 400 meters is a hell of a long way to drag a bike and rider. She must have been looking for the brakes for a while too.

Pics like that remind me to take advantage of the bikes size and float to the front of stopped traffic and lane split when neccesary.

The reaching for a ciggy is apparently her excuse for not seeing him on the bike and being distracted I have seen it many times people rummaging around in their cars looking for shit instead of watching the road ( I have actually done it myself but not in traffic - usually looking for a map book etc while on a country road The general feeling was that she was trying to do a runner after hitting him but the bike got wedged under the 4WD

I have seen that a few times. I am always shocked that that would be someones first response. **** the person you have killed or hurt, run away. Says a lot about the character of a person if that is your first subconscious action...'I don't know I just panicked'. Sigh......

Wow, how does one respond to such an outragious crime? Imagine a biker dagged her behind a few meters, how would the law respond? I sure hope someone in Australia makes her pay, and sets an examlpe of what will happen to such negligent acts agianst bikers.

Jason keep us posted if you can, or is there a site we can go to?

Sorry Jason, I meant Para

It is very sad. These kinds of tradgedies will continue to happen with the driver claiming they "panicked" I don't know about you guys, but when I "panic" it usually involves hitting the brakes, not the gas. I don't think any form of legislation or law will put an end to it. The only way we'll see an end is 50 years from now, when our solar powered vehicles are running 200mph down the highway hovering 12 inches off the ground. Everything will be computer controlled with thousands of sensors giving the CPU commands of braking, gas etc. By then certain politicians and safety advocates would have had (and hopefully not won) their battle against motorcycles. It seems impossible right now as our industry has exploded in the last 10 yrs, but I fear it'll come one day. When our grandchildren wreck, I guess they'll have to say " The computer just panicked!"

How will they hover? Powerful magnets installed under the tarmac. Mercedes and other Germans have already built a one mile stretch test section not far from the Nurburgring. Of course most of us will be gone by then.
Check out this really cool video on youtube. YouTube - Floating magnet

Just a clarification. That was my disgusted comment 'I just panicked'. It was not read anywhere regarding the accident. I still think it was vehicular homicide and she should be charged, but murder is pushing it a bit far. That requires intent. Dopey bitch!

Nah, my fault for not being clearer. I'm the one who should apologise. Sorry.
