Re: OOOPS, I dropped my Bird at a stop sign

i find it amazing at how many of you have dropped the bike a low speed,

Maybe your stopping technique and or vision skills need to be honed.

Using the rear brake at very low speed is of great benefit and allows one to stop and remain in control with the bars turned,

You must run wide a lot a T junctions, Turn the bars in the direvtion you need to go and your eyes will also ne pointed in the direction you need to go, Try it, Sit on the bike with the bars straight and note where you feel nost confortable looking. The turn the bars in one direction and I bet you will feel nost confortable looking in the direction the bars are turned,

I am sure you can stitch this together now..

1st off it was a semi sarcastic response... 2nd even when you do slow turns you are barely turning the bars, and i have no clue what your talking about looking in the direction the bars are turned... i would really like to see you riding at speed limit then turning your bars... i bet the only place youll be looking is the ground coming at you mighty fast

Wow Mike. Do you want some help sewing the poor guy's head back on? I'm not sure, but I think he was referring to low speed maneuvers.

Or maybe there were other variables - like slippery surface, gravel, pothole, brain fade, etc.

I think he was talking about what I have been taught. That is where you look at where you will be finishing the corner - in fact we were taught to point our chin to the end of the turn (because if you only use your eyes to look at the end of the corner, you can turn your eyes without turning your head). Doing this tells the brain where the end of the corner actually is, and starts to physically set up your body to complete the turn. IMO the faster you go, the more important it is to do this. Just watch guys on the track (altho, not much point if you are watching th bikes at the drag strip.....)

All at slow speed. obviously.

--------------------------------------

Thats it, point your chin at the target and pretend you are posh and stick your nose in the air as if you are royalty, 2 vision issues looked after straight away.

------------------------------

If you sit at a t junction with the bike sitting square and turn to the right ( assuming you are in the USA- LHDrive ) you will need to get to a speed where the bike has balance before you can turn it . If the bars were straight when you started off there is a pretty good chance that you would be looking straight ahead and you could move 3, 4, or even more befpre to can comfortably turn the bike. High risk running onto the wrong side of the road.

If you were to point the front wheel where you needed the bike to end up you wooukd fingd that your eyes also are looking in the same direction and the turn will be smoother and the risk of running into oncoming traffic is almost non existent.

Try it with an open mind and you will see that what I have said actually works.

If you dont want to try it assume I too was being sarcastic and laugh it off as an early Aprils fool day joke.

see ya

Devi;s advocare here.

Slippery surfaces, gravel, pothole are all things that we will see if we are paying attention, That is what we are looking out for. Hazards.

If we dont see these things and they cause us problem we could be deficient in the way we use our vision forward and peripheral

Brain fade. Againm lack of attention. Another totally avoidable rider controlled element which can affect our riding. generally brought on by fatigue, drugs, alcohol. etc or just not riding with the right attitude and keeping safety in the forefront.
