Jimmy @ A-1 Welders has been doing my welding for a few years now and has welded small aluminum parts for me in the past no problems at all.

Umm. Okay, the easiest way to tell the difference - if it was a mig he would have had the gun in one hand; if it was a tig, he had the electrode in one hand, the filler rod in the other hand, and his foot operating a pedal.

It was tig then.

sorry to hear that....maybe some shrooms as extra precaution..if the scratches ain't deep a good polishing/restoring may give good result..

Re: OOOPS, I dropped my Bird at a stop sign

Take the whole bike to a welder that has a TIG, 5 minute job, Weld it up on the bike, The earth lead must be on the end of the bracket being welded. not on the bike or the motor, otherwise it will cook wiring or seize bearings inside,
I have been welding like this for 45 years and never lost a battery or alternator yet, or cooked any wiring.
I hope this helps.
Brian.

My lower mount got bent in my accident, too. I didn't figure that out until I went to put my lower cowl on a couple of days ago. I took that sucker off and banged it into fair shape and then ended up sticking a couple of washers between it and the bolt to make things work. I think I'm going to get my buddy to fab a new longer one for me, although a new one is only $4.41 or less at Carolina Cycle.

The 'Bird sucks at slow tight turns or doing what you did. I can't remember stabbing at the pavement with my foot on any other bike except the 'Bird. I think with a full load of fuel in the tank it would be hell to pick up. Like my 84 VF1000F. I had a wreck on that and had just fueled it up. I had to get help to get that thing off its side.

I did the old slow motion put the bike on the kick stand that wasn't completely down thing on my ST1100. It pinned me against the garage wall and I had to yell for my wife to get it off me.

Be VERY CAREFUL at toll plazas if you aren't already. Those places are slick as snot. I've almost dropped the bike just putting my foot down and having no traction.
I, too am considering replacing some body parts - anyone have an email/online contact for Carolina Cycles (I cannot call out from the office)? Seems their prices are the best, even compared to Ron Ayers or discounthondaparts.

Re: OOOPS, I dropped my Bird at a stop sign

Hi
Still having flash backs from hitting some diesel on a tight left hand bend coming out of a service station. The bike must have only being going 10 miles an hours but skidded on it’s left side for a few feet with me lying on the tarmac in full view of a packed service station. Me and the bike were lifted to our feet once the onlookers had finished taking souvenir pictures !!!!! The point of the story is that I decided to fit some R&G crash protectors as I had nearly dropped it at a junction for the same reasons discussed. It did hurt me to drill holes in a perfectly good faring. The crash protectors saved all of the fairing and handlebars. The generator case was cracked and badly scored. A new generator case cost £100 to replace and the bike was back to normal again. Had a new set of R&G as well. For me these did save me a lot of cash in repairs but didn’t save me from having a red face. Still feel a bit nervous about leaning the bike in the wet.

No-one saw me fall but, I could not lift the bike and was laying there when my riding buddy came up the road to see me laying there stuck under my bike. We got the bike upright and away I went like it never happened.

Well, when I got home and looked at my bike after the ride, I saw what I did not want to see. She had a small rash and a bunch of scratches in the right side lower cowl and it cost me $403.57 for the new cowl.
Today when I went to put the cowl on, I found the lower front mount broken off the oil pan. I do not know what that will cost if I can have it fixed on the bike, should not be too expensive.
That part can be tig welded on the bike . just bevel the tab on the top side then have them put a smatt bead of 6061 or7005 aluminum on that side. Make sure they disconect the battery.

Ouch! Look on the bright side, though. At least your bike didn't go down while riding it.

You are not serious, are you?

If it helps I am about ready to order a lower right cowl, along with both front mirror covers...I checked around and Jen at Service Honda (jen@servicehonda.com) gave me the best price so check with her if you decide to replace it. I never heard back from Carolina Cycle so the heck with them - doubt they'd beat her prices anyway.

As spoiled as I am, I am going to let these little scratches sit for a while.
Honda does not need to know that I am a lame duck who can't keep his bike upright.

Re: OOOPS, I dropped my Bird at a stop sign

From what people on all kinds of big bikes tell me. Falling over while stationary or just about stopped is quite common. They are quite top heavy.
And If your not in a straight line when stopping, Damn, Over they go.
Done it twice. Stopped.

Carolina Cycle lists the '02 lower cowl at $257.04, but I think I paid less than $230 from Leon over the phone. The mirror covers are $19.99 online, but I paid less than that for them. Can't locate all my invoices or I'd tell you the exact prices.

If Service Honda can do better than that, then go for it.

Not paying attention, it is as simple as that.
I took a move for granted and dropped my bike.

I had to yell for a help and my neighbor and a friend help me out. My leg was black and blue for two weeks! I broke the right peg drag sensor off and added a few more dings to an already badly damaged right fairing that was there from the previous owner. Just take a look at:

Index of /cbrxx02

I wonder if the right mount on my engine is broken too. A good welder can fix that for you without too much grief. I'm glad your ok. I dropped my Nighthawk once when I killed the engine starting out from a stop because it was in second gear. A friend taught me to always stop and start out with the front wheel straight and that has probably saved me a lot of damage reports. The weight of that bike is pretty intimidating especially when your trapped under it.

i love the little masterlock you have on the front wheel... simplicity and efficiency at its best

Hi DeathWish01

Yeah, that is a Master construction padlock. I had two motorcycles stolen so far by the scum bags cutting chains so that the lock will only slow them down a little. Won't help a bit if two hairy gorillas come by at night and simply pick her up and haul it away. I am working on a high tech solution using a GPS chipset and an accelerometer (for motion sensing). It should be completed by end of next week. Finishing up on the assembly language for the microcontroller chip.

Re: OOOPS, I dropped my Bird at a stop sign

Spidee,
Sorry to hear of your run of luck (or lack there of) as of late. I've found that the rather short span of the bars on most of these CBR's..be it Blackbird or 1000RR-R are such that you(me) really need to pay attention to body placement when your even just rolling them around the driveway or garage. The relatively short span of the bars does not give you any extra leverage to stop the bike from going over once the weight is off center..mores the case when your standing right next to it,...it will pull you over with it. When at all possible I sit on the bike and roll it to the new location. Failing that I ensure that I've got my sh*t together before I move one anymore, normally with the bike leaning toward my body ( bit) as opposed to straight up or away from me. I'll admit that I've come very close to a non-moving drop once or twice. If there's a silver lining to this cloud it's that the panels are currently still available new from the dealers. Not so with the old F bikes as you well know.

Tony

Tony... I agree with that statement. I crashed my 1988 CBR1000F this past summer and couldn't find some of the faring pieces. I have a thread up now on that bike. It's up on crashedtoys web site right now if you want to take a look. In my gallery you can see what it looked like before the crash. I considered fixing it but couldn't find a couple of the plastic pieces just as you say.

It may be that CBR1000F parts are hard to come bye but, they are not the F bikes Tony was refering to.
The CB750F, CB900F and the CB1100F are the bikes Tony was refering to.

Re: OOOPS, I dropped my Bird at a stop sign

Strek,
CB-F bike or CBR (1000)F, almost matters not, as time passes the availability drops off for the parts. If you really wish to keep the 1000F joining a group such as this 1100xx site and others like it is one way to make things happen. Networking via these motorcycle type specific sites brings the world to your door step. It may take a while but the stock parts can more often then not be found to bring anything back to pristine condition. Repair and repainting is one option,..decal sets might be found or reproductions sourced (AFE Graphics) to allow a local painter to re-finish the orginal parts. I can not speak to the Japanesse market when it comes to the 1000F, but a few of the CB-F owners have found that by using Rinka(as a purchasing agent) and Yahoo Japan auction sites that even the 1980's era parts can be found in rather good supply in Japan. These things of course come with a cost. If you love the bike I guess it will be worth it or not. David Silver Spares is another parts source to tap perhaps.

My ownership of the early 1980's era CB-F's has never made it more clear to me that if one intends to be a long term owner of any motorcycle the need to build a parts supply is worth the effort. I ordered replacement throttle cables for my 98 XX last month, turns out they are NLA in Canada it would seem,..go figure! I've got a new body on the bike right now..and the take off's are well worth keeping and re-finishing at some point. The new to me RR-Repsol may have a body in the parts bin before to long also...just because of the limited addition status of the parts. It's not cost effective..but there is some comfort having a parts stash to keep things running and looking good. I'm not one to trade in anything it would seem. The parts might also hold there value years down the road when someone else is in need...you sure can't count on the stock market these days can ya?
