Home made plate flipper..

My latest "gadget": The licence plate flipper. What do you think?

YouTube - Flipdown motorcycle licence plate

I got the main components (12V actuator + voltage regulator) from a robotics company in Canada actually. I filmed the action with my mobile phone just after installing it. That's why the rear cowling is removed..

PS. I did this mod just because I can (I am after all a gadget freak), not because I'm planning on out running the cops or anything like that

Re: Home made plate flipper..

Actually, the first type of actuator I used had a very different gearing. It would flip the plate down in less than half a second. Only problem was that it didn't have enough torque to pull it up again (well, sometimes it would, but most of the time it wouldn't)..

The actuator I'm using is the size of a pencil, so it fits easily under the seat. I think the current setup is a keeper..

PS. The reason I got a flip-down plate in the first place was because I needed access to the keyhole to release the seat (and I didn't want to make a hole in the licence plate)..

Haha, I know. I love the Bond style. I'm currently working on a retractable laser jammer, using the same make/model of actuator as the one for my licence plate.

Now I just need to figure out :

1) How to turn the bike into a jet ski by simply flicking a switch

2) Where to store the bottle of Martini (Givi cases would be to obvious)..

I guess you could use the actuators for just about anything. The one I'm using has a 12V motor, and the maximum rod extension is 50mm. (Rod extension.. )

Re: Home made plate flipper..

I use a door lock actuator to extend and retract my liscense plate. The plate is mounted on a hinged plate that is raised and lowered in about .5 seconds, great for when you forget that you're in an area with photo radar.

That's the kind of actuator I tried out first. But there was so little torque in that motor. It would flip the plate up, but then it would fall right down again. I even tried with magnets to keep the licence upright, but since the actuator was so weak, it wouldn't flip the plate down as long as the magnets tried to keep it upright..

The actuator I'm currently using has much more torque. So much that you have to pull/push the licence plate with quite a lot of force before it will budge. No way the licence plate will fall down unintentionally now
