I knew this day would come at some point... it is *still* a very difficult decision.
I have done about as much as I can with the Blackbird over these past 9 years.... it is time for me to move on. These photos from last weekend will tell ya what bike I am looking at.... I am now busy returning the XX to stock condition, and it will be placed on consignment this weekend.
SOOOOOooooo.... I will be launching a massive Blackbird goody sale here over the next couple of days (in the "For Sale" sub-forum, obviously).
There are some serious, SERIOUS high-end XX hardware that will be offered.... including a freshly overhauled, 0-mile Ohlins rear shock with Remote Hydraulic Pre-Load, a set of BRAND NEW Galfer Wave rotors - less than 500 miles on them!
The list goes on... a Power Commander II, a pair of Erion Racing black aluminum slip-ons, custom Auxiliary Light Brackets, a Speed-o-Healer, and one of the hotter items: a custom 4.9-gallon gravity-fed Aux Fuel Cell (that resides on the pillion area) bundled with a custom Bill Mayer half-seat!
There will be yet other items as well.... watch the "For Sale" sub-forum for all these goodies.

Looks like you and the guys had a blast in the dirt!

Warchild. Good luck with the new ride. It's not something that I would do personally. If I was going to go off road I'd want something more like a true dirt bike and without a trunk on it. I'd want to be ripping and jumping the thing like when I was a kid starting out on dirt bikes. It does look like you all had some fun on them though and if its what you want then go for it. Good luck and have fun with it.

V-Stroms and Transalps are a long way from XX's but I noticed you have a 'Busa to compensate for the need to go into orbit ...... Good luck

If I was going to go off road I'd want something more like a true dirt bike and without a trunk on it. | Well, the issue is that I need the bike to perform two distinctly different missions:
- have the ability to handle reasonably graded dirt roads, Forest Service roads, decent gravel/hard-pan roads, etc., however....
- it must still have the ability to run fairly long distances on highways (in order to get me to said Forest Services roads, etc), and thus must have reasonable highway properties. too.
And I don't really have the cashflow to be scoring a new bike, so I need to be careful and make the correct decision on the new bike model. The DL650 "Wee-Strom" and even the BMW F650GS were both on the short list... until I actually rode one. The 650cc bikes sorta struggle on the highway at speed. And if a emergent situation develops and I need to get the hell outta the way or pass someone in a hurry, it ain't happenin' on these bikes.
So.... I am going after a new (leftover) 2007 DL1000 that I can pick up for a song.... trading in the silver XX for it tomorrow, if I finish returning the bike to stock tonight.
And while working on returning the 'Bird to stock condition, I ran across additional XX goodies I didn't mention in my first post.... including Pazzo levers (black-anodized), a spare stock seat, Footpeg Lowering brackets, Service Manuals... this will be a helleva sale!

Well all seasons come to an end. But new ones start. I met you on the XX email list back in the 90's when we first got the XX's I was XXVFR back then. We lost some friends. I found a picture of a girl form the list named Leann from the LA area that was too cool ridin the XX. RIP.
I've kept up with you as my uncle has an ST and was on that forum lurking over you. I may even be tripping by and see you at the IBA Conference in Tulsa in two weeks.
I have the dual sport bug too and am leaning toward the KTM 990 Adventure S. Maybe I'll meet you on one of those 'forest service roads'
Two down bro!

Sure looked like fun out there in "The Wild" lucky you're such a sturdy looking guy - my lack of height and bulk would have me struggling with the V-Strom that's for sure!!
On the subject of selling off your goodies, I'd like to express an interest in the Pazzo levers - what colour are the adjusters? Be great if they were also black but, I could live with gold - assuming you don't mind the hassle of mailing to the UK, how much are you asking Dale?
Cheers

Steve | I am asking $100 even, plus shipping.
Which in your case, Steve, shipping to England could be a pretty penny!
My black Pazzo Levers do indeed have black adjusters, too. Click on these thumbnails to see the details:

Those are great photos. Reminds me of some of the trips I took when I lived out west and was much younger. We did not have "moto bikes" but did things like that on CBX's, Hurricanes, 750 Hondas etc... Sure got them dirty. How can you endure those clothes in August?

Warchild... Good point about getting a bike that can get you to those remote roads. In fact its one of the reasons why I don't have a dirt bike any longer.
I live in Chicago and its too far to get to any decent dirt riding area's and I'm not one to trailer a bike. It does look like you guys had a blast. Have you thought about selling the bird outright? Most dealerships around here give you squat for trade in value. Well looking forward to your sale. The levers do look great so if Steve doesn't end up going for them let us know.

Warchild-
I've followed you through a few sites and am sorry to see you moving on from the Bird..though I can understand....
But tell me..how do you feel about your Busa? RMC in Renton still has a couple of 07's and I keep looking at these...
Thanks!
