Pulled up to a stop sign and was mildly surprised when another Blackbird pulled up beside me.
Since we were out in the country I asked him if he wanted to have a little run. Thought we might be kin. His name was posted on the side as Kelly Johnson. Nothing wrong with being proud of your Bird, I guess.
Anyway, he turned me down. Guess the looks of me in my black Joe Rocket outfit and black helmet kinda made him realize he would have some competition. He did acknowledge that I'd probably take him for the first few hundred yards or so, but bragged that he figured he could outrun me in the long run. Yeah, right!!
I grabbed a quick shot before I did a tire squealing wheelie and was gone. I've posted his Bird below. Wade
Check out the Southern Flight display at the B'ham airport your next visit to Barber Motorsports.

Sign says: A-12 Historic first version of the SR-71 "Blackbird"
Lots of other planes there including F100, F104, F105, etc. The Southern Flight Museum is just off I-20, southeast of the Birmingham International? Airport. On the pilot's side is "Bill Parks" and on the copilot side is "Kelly Johnson."
Yeah, I was amazed at how great it looked. The other planes were showing lots of wear and tare.
My hope was to visit and try to get a photo of the XX beside the bomber, like the photo I saw recently, but no chance. No guards, but no way to get the XX over that tall chain link fence. I couldn't even find a gate. Wade

The Blackbird was primarily used as a high altitude reconnaisance aircraft. It's combination of speed and altitude made it pretty much immune to being shot down by enemy missiles. I've flown with a few Air Force guys who flew the BB, and they told me stories of Mig encounters where the Russian pilots would zoom up to their max altitude, then fire a missile at the top of their arc. BB pilots would just turn away from the missile, and the missile never had a chance. The Birds were expensive to keep flying, but they were quite a technological marvel considering when they were designed.

I have a friend who did maintenance on the blackbird. He mentioned that the fuselage was designed to stretch and flex due to the speeds and altitudes. Leaking all kinds of hydraulics along the way.

IIRC, the titanium wing leading edges would grow a number of inches inflight due to heating. On the ground, they leaked in their shrunken state. Heating your coffee was done by placing your cup on the glareshield.

There is an SR71 Blackbird sitting in front of the Space and Rocket center in Huntsville, Al. You can pull the bike up as close as you want to get a pic.
If you come this way, let me know.

The pilots wore orange space suits and the ground crew were all civilians. On take-off it was the loudest plane I have ever heard.
