Do we have a member with that tag?? Which brings me to the real topic. I watched a Doc on the CBC TV about being hit by lightening. They profiled this woman, riding a Bird at night, plate readING XXGIRL, who was hit by lightening while riding. She lived.:)Now this isn't my biggest riding fear however, what is your standard procedure when you ride into a cell or see one on the horizon. Remember, lightening can flash "sideways" up to 15 plus kms. I witnessed "sheet" lightening when riding into Cody, Wyoming and rode through a rain storm, it was windy but passed through it. :thumbd: yes or no? I never considered being struck by lightening although it has killed riders, all be it, not too many. What say you all??

My excuse is that I'm studying primary teaching, but I'm pedantic anyway, you mean albeit, not all be it :)

I think you'd be real frickin' unlucky to get hit by lightning on a bike, but even if you did it probably wouldn't be the lightning that would kill you, but falling off afterwards.

p.s. unless you're a chick, you're unlikely to get struck by lightEning ;-)

the worst scenario...you ridind out in wide open space with nothing but trees...the first thing you must not do is find shelter under a tree....reach out any available buildind in the area but stay in a safe distance from antennas or anything like that...in case of severe lightning storm , keep your self as close to the ground and avoid anything that extends towards the sky....

The only problem is that lightning doesnt hit the highest thing in the area but the the object/person with the highest opposing ion charge. there has been objects/people hit by lightning standing on the ground next to the empire state building and the bottom row of a statium with thousands of people and lightning rods around them. Trees do act like lightning rods because of there high biomass. there was one guy who was riding a bike on one side of a mountain in western america and was struck by lightning from a storm on the other side mountain it was like 30 miles away.

To XXGIRL, sorry about the lightening strike, tell us about it. DalasConstable, if you're going to correct everyones grammar and syntax and spelling, you won't have much time for your own posts. "The best writing is re-writing."

OK, now you're freaking me out. Like I don't have enough to worry about when I'm touring on my Bird.

Getting hit by lightning is in the same league as being eaten by a shark !
There is much more to worry about when riding a bike.
There's usually thousands of hazards we face every day ! ...................................................... They're called cars
Oh ! And to XXGIRL ............................... Hope all is well and get back on :thumb:

It does look like she has the same exaust as I do. I have never seen another Bird with that exaust. I guess I am not as unique as I thought. Wouldnt the rubber tires protect aginst everything but a direct hit?

If I ever see a shark with long legs and antlers trying to cross the road, I'll quit riding. I doubt the tires would protect you. What if it hit your watch, or some metal bling, or a farkle? OMG, nuke this tread.

The ONLY time I was worried about this was on my trip from riding around QLD, did 1100kms in 12hrs or so on my old GS500, loaded with 14-days worth of camping gear. For about 9 out of 12 hours I was riding through rain, and one stretch there was NOTHING taller than me in sight, open plane and thunders and lightning all around me. Scared the sh-t out of me. I know if I didnt get hit then, I never will... :)

I got caught in quick hitting thunder lightning and rain storm last summer. I was only a mile from home but it was the longest mile of my life. The rain was so hard all I could was gray and green. I stayed on the gray and didn't stop because the lightning was everywhere and I figured a moving target would be less likely hit. I came to an area that was pretty wide open and I'll tell you I have never been so scared in my life. I heard an explosion then I went deaf for a couple of minutes. It felt like it just missed me. Its happened to me before. When I was in high school we had football practice in a rain storm. It got real intense real fast. There was an explosion. It hit me and a bunch of my teamates. My coach wasn't so lucky. He got it directly and it killed him. Lightning is scary stuff.

Hehe I didnt mention it was getting dark and the highway was deserted (probably one good thing, not having to worry about already blind drivers blinded a little more by rain on windscreens) wet to the skin and 700kms ahead of me still... that same night I was riding on fumes, counting kms klicking over, passing station after station that aren't open at night, looking for fuel. Eventful day that was, but I'm off the lightning topic so I'll stop ;).
