Well after 20 years travelling to the Le Mans 24hr sportscar race without incident all happened at once. On Thursday while travelling from Dieppe to Le Mans in pouring rain I entered tip toeing a roundabout I'd estimate the speed as between 15 and 20 mph..well diesel mixed with water aint so good..lost the front..was up before the bike sliding away hit an 8 inch kerb...result one written-off CBR1100XX. See picky . Now you may think that that was the end of the story oh no...I'll summarise...got recovered to the Citreon Dealership...waited 3 hours for Taxi to get hire car...travelled to Le Mans watched the race (not a bad race Audi R10 beat the favourites Peugeot 908's they are seriously quick)...my friend then proceeded to borrow the hire car keys as he'd stored his helmet and leathers in the hire car..he forgot to give them back and proceeded to ride the 320 miles north to Calais..so I'm at Le Mans with an open hire car with the keys travelling north. Great got AVIS Assistance...they recoverd the car and ordered a replacement..problem AVIS Le Mans closing at 8 PM time 7 PM taxi ordered...taxi arrives 8.15..so I'm in Le Mans without a hirecar and all hotels within 50 miles are full. Result 120 mile taxi ride and 370 (300 stg / 580 usd) euros to my original hotel I should have been at...well not a good weekend all in all...insurance currently argueing with recovery company as to who should pick up the recovery cost for the bike back to the UK...I bet it'll be 3 months before there is an outcome...

Man that sux! I almost did the same thing the other day but it wasn't raining so I saw the Trans fluid / Diesel, not sure which, before I ran thru it in a curve no less..... Close call

If I was you, I would buy it back from the insurance and fix it... I have fixed MUCH worse and you would never be able to tell!

This is the Repsol I fixed for my son's Christmas present before and after pictures....

Wow, sorry about your misfortune. Hope everything works out ok. I love that race by the way. Hopefully you'll not be without your Bird for the summer months.

I hate hearing stories like this ................................ because we all have one sooner or later !
The one where one whole day goes to shit

Glad you were OK though !
I'm with jsfrv6, I had worse than this on my ZX9R when I nailed a dog on the freeway at 140 kph. Bought it back from the insurance company and repaired it like new. As long as there is no structural damage it's just all paint and cosmetics. You can pick up OEM cans for a song on ebay.
Best of luck mate

The good news is that you were OK enough to attend the race and seems like not much must have happened to you. The bike is replaceable and or fixable. After reading jsfrv6's post I'm thinking your best bet would be to see if he would adopt you. Then all you have to do is wait for Christmas to roll around. How about it jsfrv6???? Would you adopt me and our friend from the UK?

Thats poopie, glad it was a slow one and you walked away....as for the rest of your day, well, when it rains it poures.....

Is the damage to the bike worse that it looks, cause to me, it doesn't look like a right off.

Lou

Mate, glad you could get up and walk away. Is there any frame damage? If not, it should be repairable (Jaws would be a good source for new parts or a knowledge base for good second hand parts).

Update - thanks for all the comiserations et all...here is the latest...my insurance company have said that I must recover the bike back to the UK...that cost is Stg 579.00. Now for the upshot...if I arrange for a motorcycle dealership in France to estimate the damage add the repratriation costs they will either write-off the bike or pay for the repairs. Even if the bike is repaired they will not bring the bike back to the UK. My estimate just from looking at the damage is that the parts alone will be GBP 2,200 plus the labour will bring it very close to the value of the bike, but adding the 579.00 will take it over the "uneconomical to repair" figure. I'd defo say that with secondhand parts the bike is repairable for under its value...still summer is here and I'm without a bike...I reckon on 10 weeks before its sorted.

Go buy another one on finance and cop the 10-12 week interest charges then pay it out when the insurers pay out the write-off. It'll be worth the extra dough to ride in the summer months

Hey that doesn't sound too bad. I figure she's gotta be getting tired of Brad by now.

I feel your pain BUT no bike for the summer months? OMG that pain is too much to bare. Can you rent a van big enought to stuff the Bird into and bring her home yourself?

Ant, I'm so sorry for your troubles. I know you will get through it. I had similar issues (bones not bike) last year that cost dearly. One of my moto mantras is "If you have not had a collosal on road fook up then you dont ride as much as you should". It comes to us all eventually. If you can get through this and come out the other side still a motorcyclist then you move up on the evolutionary scale of the moto world.

I rode for 22 years without an accident then Boom!

Power to you my friend.

All bikers have a BIG fook up story ............ and when you don't, you're usually dead !

Well it took 7 weeks for the French motorcycle dealership to tell my insurance company the bike is a write-off. I now have to argue the value as they offered me only about 1/2 the bikes actual value.

Update - now 4 months out and I'm still waiting for the insurance to pay up ... won't be able to get another BB with the monies settled so will end up riding an inferior bike I'm afraid..summers plans in tatters really pee'd off.
