Hey everyone,
Didn't post here in quite a while due to 'new' night shift job and sleeping all day long, but now that I've had the worst happen, I don't know where to start. Last night on my way to work, something happened and I still don't understand what. Because it happened so fast, it would lead me to believe that the front gave in at 70 (I think), most likely due to the 'black snake' we in NSW have so many of (the emulsion connection that holds the tarmac lanes together). Either way I dove in to the left, what had seemed face first and literally watched tarmac slide by inches from my eyes. Feels unreal in retrospect. I'm pretty good, grazed wrists and hurting left arm, badly grazed knees and slightly swollen right shin. I'm yet to see a doc...
BUT. Bird looks really bad and I'm yet to see her in daylight. I was able to ride her slowly to the work garage and am yet to see if she leaks oil. The (engine?) cover on the left is badly damaged, the lower fairing is destroyed, the upper cowl (this hurts the most) is also skratched but am yet to check for structural damage, after it slid up on a curb . Rear cowl maybe, don't remember checking, skratched exhaust but tank untouched. Mirror/indicator severed, found it like 6m away in the grass but otherwise undamaged except for skratches.
Anyway, sorry about the essay, but need any information as to where to start looking for fairing and mirror (in case its realled effed). Not interested in genuine, it's the aftermarket I'm after due to cost coz I didn't have insurance other than theft so I have to fix all this myself. But I don't need any more flaming in this regard, believe me...
Appreciate any info you guys can offer. Thanks.

Glad to hear you are OK. Can't help with the aftermarket faring parts. I see ads for these types of places in the motorcycle magazines but I have no experience with them.

Glad your ok, the best I can tell you for parts is to log onto ebayUK. and try to see if they will ship the parts to you, there seem to be the most parts there.

Romus,
Sorry to hear about your off. The snakes can easily cause the front to track along its length. If it is wet or slippery, then it will be too easy to lose the front and down you go. I happened to me once on the CB750FB and still to this day I dont know how I stayed upright.
When I lost the front at Phillip Island, I had mirror bracke, stator (AC generator) cover, lever, and a few other bits and peices. I replaced all of that (incl 4 litres of Shell VSX4) for about $150. I used the VFR clutch lever, it is the same as the bird, but I paid $27 for the viffer instead of $65 for the bird lever.
Unless the fairings are TOO bad, you could also try to repair the fairings pieces with Plastex. It's like bog for plastic bits, and can be used to make/glue tabs, etc. I think the distributor is in Sydney somewhere. Google them if you want.
If you want new ABS plastic, then try Wareagle Racing. Top Cowl and both sides for US$900 including shipping to Oz. (I was quoted this price at the end of Jan '08). Fibreglass pieces can be even cheaper.
Take care, get your arse to a doc to get checked out, and keep us informed of how you are going.

Hey guys, thanks for input!
Yea developed a headache I couldnt get rid of couple hours after the off, and got worried and went to doc. Meanwhile all the bumps and blue marks started showing too, like on my shin bones, below my knees, wrists, forearms, hip, shoulder etc. Anyway xrays showed all fine, brain ct scan also showed everythin normal (heh within reason ) so that's all good.
As for the fairing, I didn't see the bike yet (it's at work and I got a few nights off so don't wanna go back there), but I remember seeing holes in the fairing. I think I'll try and repair the upper cowl. The width of the engine saved the gear and clutch levers and the peg so that's all good (from memory). I remember the engine cover being badly skratched too. I'll have a look at it tomorrow night (back at work then) and will update you guys.
Thanks, everyone.

Paul mate, thanks a lot for this war eagle racing site. I checked them out, seems now entire set (front, sides, rear and front fender, including 'free' windscreen) is 699. Only concern I'm having is whether it's as strong as originals or will i feel the difference at 200+...
Anyway, gonna look at the bike first before ordering but it being 699 is great news.

The OEM plastics are relatively thin, but ABS is pretty tough. Even if wareagle do skimp a bit on wall thickness, then it "should" still be plenty tough enough - and being a lot of their fairings are for trackies, the strength at speed shouldn't be an issue.
$699 sounds even better. Roll on tax time.
Glad to hear that you are only black and blue and not broken. Wouldnt want to have to call in the 4B's

That's pretty much what happened to my '98 red Bird. Except that I was doing 100k on the M4 at the time and it slid straight into the cheesecutter... writeoff.
Good gear kept all my skin on except for a small patch on my left arm where my sleeve twisted as I hit a lane marker as I hit the ground and gave me a 1" round friction burn.
Good luck with your repairs! At least you are mostly ok... |

Hey guys, another long delay in between my responses. Brought the bike home couple of weeks ago but due to work was unable to start working on it. Great news - bike is great, at least compared to what it looked like that night. Bad skratches to lower left fairng (which I got a second hander from wrecker for 175, snapped bolts, craked casing (got new), snapped mirror (got new), left exhaust bent in about 15-20mm but no bad skratches on it and brakes feel bad and are noisy. Still need to figure out if it's disks or just collected somethin in the slide. All in all, I'm happy.
Need to ask a favour though, I thought casing would be simple to replace so I didnt order a repair manual, now that I got it I realise beside the 10-odd bolts attaching it to the engine, there are 4 bolts on the inside coming the other way? Would anyone have a picture/sketch from their manual's they could post/email me so that I know what I'm doing?
Longest month ever, keep caging and looking enviously at passing bikes
Thanks for your support, everyone

Have you looked in here? Honda CBR 1100XX Service Manual 1999+
If you want a microfische schematic, try places like Ron Ayers and other parts distributors in the US.

You should be able to just pull it off but with some force once the bolts are loose. The bolts coming the other way that you mention hold part of the alternator parts on to the cover, you'll bolt that back onto the replacement cover using the existing parts. I'm not mechanical wizz so I don't know what everything is called, but I'm pretty sure I'm correct on what you're encountering.
As soon as I have some time on a rainy day I'm going to replace mine and I'll let you know if I find out anything to the contrary. Make sure you have a new gasket for the cover, the old one is sure to rip apart.

To remove the stator cover, just remove all the external bolts and remove the cover straight off (not on an angle). When it is off there should be 4 cap screws holding the stator onto the casing. It will just be a case of removing these screws and placing the stator (after inspecting the back of the stator for any damage) into the new cover and screwing it in. It should be self centering. Put in a new gasket, make sure the leads are routed correctly and replaced all external bolts.
Job finished.

Ok, last update on this dark chapter o' mine... Thanks to the advise I found on here, casing was replaced in no time and engine was purring like a sweatheart... Then was time to attend to the 'brake' issue. Which was kind of suspicious, as disks had no mark on them, fork or calipers had no mark either, and each would have had contact with the road before the disk did... but the bad grinding in neutral bothered me still... It was then I realised my forks were twisted. Handlebar pointing straight, front wheel bit to the right... lucky me. But, I was able to ride it to a mech I like (like 30kms) and he released and put em back together and fixed it for me for 130 bucks. Lucky they werent bent, that's all I'm thinking.
So, brothers and sisters, I'm back in the flock (albeit with a semi naked Bird as I'm still looking for one of the brackets for the fairing...) and DAMN it feels SO good...
Just wanna thank everyone for their support.

Sounds like I may be a little late comming to this thread, but this company makes replacement farings for the B.B. The price seems okay, and they will paint to your specs. eBay Store - Mung88: Honda CBR 1100: CBR 1100 XX ABS fairing for Honda Blackbird CBR1100XX E
Sorry to hear about the Bird, gald you are okay.
