New here, but not to cycling. I've had many bikes, big and small.
I'm looking at an 02 Bird and thought I'd ask what problems should I look out for on a sub 10k Bird?
Any common problems?
Any recalls associated with this machine?
Thanks

man, a sub 10k bird! buy it I can't imagine anything much to worry about at that stage of life unless it's been abused. The cam chain tensioners tend to wear out quickly, but that's a cheap and easy fix. Nothing else comes to mind at the moment.

There's no problems that a sub 10K miles XX will have !

There was a recall on some of the 02's.....it concerned the Braking system....get the VIN# and check in with a dealer.....
Tensioners can be a small problem but (as already identified) a quick and easy fix.
Voltage Regulators are sometimes a problem but again, quick and easy fix.
If it hasn't been dropped or abused, you have a jewel on your hands.

I have an 02 and bought it with 23k and have had no issues other than maintenence with my Bird. Cosmetically could use some paint (rock chips mostly) but no issues at all so far. Under 10k I would be looking at that baby hard. Most Bird owners take care of them pretty well.

FoxFader, There are sites that will give you values on used motorcycles. Kelley Blue Book - Motorcycles - Official Kelley Blue Book Site
$6170. My zip code. Retail value. Used 2002 HONDA CBR11XX2 prices, values, specs and options at NADAguides
Nada came in at $5440 average retail price. Didn't ask for a zip code at that site.
There are other online sites as well. Just Google on used motorcycle book value.
AN 2002 bird with less the 10K on the dial sounds like a great one and these bikes are super reliable. If the price works out I'd go for it. When I bought my 99 used I went to as many of these pricing sites as I could find to get a base starting point for negotiating. I got it well under all of the values that I could find at these sites. Since motorcycling is a passion for most I find that sellers of used motorcycles are typically motivated to sell the bike. In other words there is normally a reason that is driving them to sell. New kid on the way maybe too many bikes maybe it scared the you know what out of the owner. With an XX since it is not a real well known motorcycle in the states he may not be getting a lot of traction or interest in it. My seller needed money for a new car as his had died. He had just bought a new house and they were expecting their second child. He had it up for sale on a couple of different sites for a couple of months. He had one previous person prior to me call him about the bike. That person never came out to take a look at it. I did and it was showroom condition with less the 9k on the dial. I've bought a fair share of used bikes and often find some reason why the seller is motivated to sell. Dealerships are often the same in particular with a XX since they aren't well known. Hope this helps.

Less than 10,000 miles. Just had the first service. Nothing should be wrong with it with those few miles. Take it for a ride. If all ok grab it. Its still a new bike. Must have have scared him. Grab it you wont reget it. Just check reg/rect wires at plug are not burnt or overheated as that could indicate reg failure on the way. A lot of people say cam tensioner problems but I have a 97 with original tensioner and no problems. If carbs are out of sync it rattles the clutches etc and cause you to mistaken believe cam tensioner problems. Also new rubber is probably needed check dates on tyres as tyre older than 5 years old is passed use by date so be careful if going quick. It should be on its 2nd set of tyres now.

thanks for the replys folks.

Foxfader,
Cool. I think that from the responses that you are getting an accurate feeling that these are reliable bikes. Since you are in the car business you know that pricing is affected by the region as well. If you review the For Sale section and some of the introductions on this forum you may get a feeling for what used birds are going for as well. Good luck. It sounds like you have a great candidate. Let us know when you close the deal and post up some pics when you get a chance.

Bought my 2002 BB about 1.5 yrs ago for $6650.00 cd. with around 10,000 kms (6200 miles) near mint condition, all it needed was a rear tire. Had been looking for something to replace the 1985 V65 Magna I'd sold. Saw this one, did some research and had to have it! NO regrets...No problems.
My only concern is that since it's a silver BB apparently it's not as fast as the RED ones

You gotta go passed the red ones to get to the black one in front. |

One big problem you may have to look out for is getting so deluded to think that colour makes a difference in the speed of you bird. Most people ride one bird and think it must be the fastest on the planet - they are not far off the mark - but then they decide that colour is what makes their bird fastest.
There is currently a big debate going on as to why colour makes a difference to the speed of a blackbird. So that's where the colour quips have escaped from!

I bought my '02 bird just over a year ago with 12,500 miles on the odo and haven't had any problems yet other than a worn out chain, nail in the rear tire, screw in the front tire and regular maintenance on top of that (All of which is un-related to the great engineering and build quality of Honda). Some people are bringing up the R/R, but I'm pretty sure that you won't have a problem with one on an '02 unless you have another electrical problem that causes it. They revamped the R/R after '99 and the '00 and up XX's have much beefier R/R cases with cooling fins.
I would say an '02 under 10k miles... maybe $6,200 plus or minus, depending on condition.
