I had a poor showing at the department of motor vehicles today man that road coarse they have setup in the back parking lot is horriable i know people do it all the time but man i did all i could to make the turns and not drop bike after screwing up riding over the marked lines i had to make a sharp u turn and got almost all the way thru and had to put my foot down. FAILED.

It doesn't seem fail we have to ride the same coarse as the smaller bikes even though are turning radius are not the same i am upset with myself and dmv. The guy did let me practice on the coarse and i don't care how slow i did it i could not get it. Then i started clutching out and almost drop bike and then i said we are finished with that days practicing. can anyone tell me how their endorsment test went or did they just take a class to receive their motorcycle license.

I failed the test twice on a vulcan 750 and rode with no license for a couple of years. Then in 97 I bought a new bird and passed the test on the first shot. It's as if it was meant to be.

Sorry to hear you had trouble. I dont intend this to be nasty, but you cant expect dmv to make a hard course for small/light bikes and an easy course for big/heavy bikes. If anything it maybe should be even harder for a big bike. There is a lot more bike, a lot more weight and a lot more power to get you into trouble. You have to know what to do and how to do it when you are out on the street. Pass and fail on the test can equate to live or die on the road.

As a part of my daily ride I have to make U-turns at freeway intersections. I have learned to make these turns at nearly full lock (my thumb is trapped between the bar and the tank. For safety, these turns have to be made reasonably quickly and very confidently, and it is something that is getting better every time I do them.

As I think it was suggested, that when you got the bird, that you should spend a lot of time in empty carparks or open spaces practising. Not just taking off and rolling to a stop, but also turning (both easy and tight turns). Once you start getting a bit comfortable, step it up a bit. SLOWLY work your way up to emergency stops - both in a straight line and in a turn. Practice turning from a stationary position (like you would at an intersection). Practice U-turns. After a LOT of practice, then start on other emergency situations, like avoidance scenarios (what would happen if something fell out the back of a ute or a truck, animals, etc.) and maybe even an emergency stop and rapid avoidance (coz maybe the car behind wont stop in time).

As I said, I dont intend this to be nasty in any way at all, but (to be melodramatic) it is you LIFE you are dealing with. I hope you take these suggestions seriously.

you did not mentilon what bike you took the test on but i took mine on my gs1000s katana not easy on slow speeds it was a public road course.3:00 pm on a school day in a busy town. The test started on a crowded street cars parked on both sides(narrow street)stayed close to center yellow fearing an opening door, then thefig 8 almost got ran over by a school bus.I did pass but he scolded me about the yellow line my reply was staying away from possible exiting driver he said ok and that was it.My advise is to practice and practice with the bike you are taking the test on. And yes by all means take it on a closed course certainly safer bet.Best of luck.....chris

Why not take the MSF course? Valuable riding instruction, discount on your insurance, take certificate to dmv when complete, and get licensed. Win, win, win.

Get yourself a riding permit so you can at least get some experience LEAGALLY. With AZ laws, you can get the permit by just taking the written test. It allows you to ride during the day on city streets only (no highways) and you can't carry any passengers. Also, going slower during the turns can actually make it more difficult, to a degree. You just have to learn to trust the bike to make the turn. My MSF coach showed us that by doing a tight figure 8, one that I couldn't do on the honda nighthawk they provided me, and he did it on his full dresser harley. It is all about trust and confidence.

I agree on the MSF-here in Middle Tennessee you can take the course, pass it and go to the DMV with the certificate of completion and you get your motorcycle license with no test from them-good practice and you can save on insurance also.

well being the brilliant guy i am i fiqured hell go and just take the dmv road course then go later and take the class. Didn't work to well this first time around. I do need to start making tighter turns when i practice. I did have to turn the handle bars all the way to the tank to make the turns inside of the road course area, which i was like noway. I got my learners permit when i first purchase the bike and i have been taking morning and evening rides across towns. i am sure the bike can do the course i just can't see it i am trying to get one of my friends that have large cycle to go over there on the weekend to just to see it done on a large bike thats all i need. The technique i was trying to use has flaws i just don't know how to fix it. I will try doing tight fiqure 8's i just don't want to drop it maybe that is my flaw. I will find out soon.

In my previous post I didn't mean to imply anyone should ride illeagly. I was young and stupid. I do think everyone should take the MSF class. I took it after I had my license I learned a few things and saved on Insurance.
