Thanks for the explaination. Mine does some surging as well, but only on the upper revs and sometimes at WOT. Seems like the problems I'm encountering are right in the transition between needle and main jet, so I'm not sure which one I need to adjust. Oh well, I'll inspect the fuel petcock and vacuum hoses first, then we'll see..

basically it makes it really tough to maintain a constant speed. the bike responds very poorly to subtle throttle inputs. It will typically run well when you really whack it open, but if you just barely twist it open (like when going up a slight incline) it will sputter and fall on it's face until you twist it further and get the carb running on the main jet circuit, unleasing 100+ horses of sudden acceleration.

I typically find myself occillating between 70 and 85 mph, cussing constantly because the bike isn't responding the way I want it too.

Moving the needle e-clip one notch down fixed it right up. It runs great, but it's a little rich in the midrange now. The motor likes it (it even runs a little cooler) but it costs a lot to feed it!
Mines did it also recently on a 600 ml round-trip. Could you explain moving "the needle e-clip" one notch down?

Open the carbs, lift the vacuum diaphrams, and you'll see a needle (approximately 5 cm long) in each carb. The needles are held in place by an e-clip. If you have a Dynojet kit, you'll see that the needle has several grooves on the top end. By moving the e-clip one notch down, you're actually lifting the needle one notch up from the main jet, hence you're enrichening the fuel mixture on the middle range. If you have the OEM needles, there are no extra grooves on them, so you'll have to place a number of ø=3mm washers underneath the e-clip. Two washers equals to one "notch" (roughly)..

EDIT: I just realised that you don't have carbs on your 'bird!
That means that you'll have to get yourself a Power Commander and ECU map that provides more fuel..
