OK, so I got my '98 Blackbird about 2 weeks ago. About 1.5 years ago, my brother-in-law destroyed a '98 Blackbird in a corner at about 110. He claims LBS got him, but anyway. Thanks be to God, he walked away with torn jeans and mild road rash. He hasn't ridden a motorcycle since. Bad: Wasn't his bike. Worse: Dude had owned it for 3 days. So... David paid for the bike, but kept the pieces.
He's got the centerstand (which I'm going to grab Saturday). All the plastic is shattered, and the left bar is gone. I'm thinking about grabbing the whole wreck for parts. The motor and tranny are there, as well as some electricals. What should a guy keep from the donor 'Bird? It's totalled, but I may take some pics to show y'all. I'm thinking to keep it around for the motor and transmission. If the seat's not shot, maybe use it for a seatpan/custom Russell build someday.
Thoughts? Am I dumb, and should just take the centerstand and be done with it?

Grab the lot as you never know how handy it's going to be one day .... for you or someone else.
Shame about your bro giving up 2 wheels !

Yeah. He was damned lucky. Jeans, tank top, flip flops (!!!), no helmet. Dumbass is lucky to be alive. And it scared the piss out of him. He was freaking out on the phone when I talked to him about the donor bike. "No way, dude, you bought that thing?! That's the craziest fastest thing I've ever ridden" - and that's after he rode a ZX-10R.

If you've got the room (inside, or covered) I'd say junk the trash parts and keep the rest. As reliable as I hear they are, replacement parts can get costly. On another note, Jeans, tank top, flip flops, no helmet??? In a corner at 110?????? I'd say it's not a shame he gave up 2 wheels. I'd say good for him!! He's probably greatly increased his chances of being around for his family. Life is full of risks, but to take uneccessary ones isn't cool!

Tank top? Flip flops? No helmet????? Good thing he gave it up. I feel like a dumb ass when I ride mine down the street without a helmet at 20 MPH after washing it.

Yeah, I was thinking about ripping it apart and putting the pieces in boxes in my garage for a rainy day. I can see keeping this bike regardless of whatever else comes along. You don't see them anymore around here. I'd also like an '03 for the garage, just to have an FI Bird, too. Dammit. These XX bikes seem to be habit-forming...
But yeah, he fully admits his dumbass move, so at least some good came out of it. One of those "hey, let me check this thing out - oh holy shit" moments.
Needless to say, my sister and his four children were very much on his mind as he tumbled into the road ditch. Now he flies RC airplanes for fun, and plays on an old 500cc snowmobile in the winter.
It did reinforce for me, however, the importance of ATGATT. He was lucky - like 1,000,000:1 lucky. I know I'm not that lucky, so I'll gear up for when the day arrives to bounce my helmet off of something hard.

Yeah. The flip-flops thing I still give him shit about. He works construction, so he always talks about eyewear, etc. - then I say "except no steel toes, right, Nancy?"

One lucky Bro you got there my man!! Dodged a bullet there. If you have the room I would take the Bird and part it out. Keep what you want and sell what you don't want. There are plenty of other Bird owners needing parts from time to time and don't have a lot of money to spend.

It's all based on price. If you can get what you want/need for a reasonable dollar value, go for it! And the bil was lucky to walk away....
I flew r/c for two seasons but sold my stuff to go back to riding. I think motorcycles are downsizing the membership of our r/c club in a hurry.....

My vote is to keep life simple. Get your brother in law's bird and make the parts available to CBRxx members. Don't bother keeping bits and pieces around to clutter up your life - I expect that you'll never need them to the extent you think you may.
I recently moved and had to clean out a few well stocked sheds full of things that may have come in useful "one day". It felt liberating to clean out and not have a whole heap of "future" projects hanging over my head.
Anyway life should be kept simple. Enjoy your bird and don't complicate the simple pleasures of life.

Go for it if the price is right. Keep what you need and post and part out the rest. You will probably won't not need the majority of the stuff unless you dumped yours and the plastic (which you would need) on that one is already trashed. I've always wondered what the LBS would do in a stop or die situation. I've made quite a few hard and quick stops on this bike and feel that I can still modulate brakes. Really don't notice the LBS unless I'm just using the rear brake which I don't do. From what I recall the initial braking only activates one of the pistons in the front caliper.
