OK, I've read this twice now and I'm a little confused. Where is this 100HP limit in 1st gear coming from for '02+ models? I've never heard of such a thing until recently. Is it true, or are the posts I've read just jokes?

These were probably BOTH my posts that you were reading...

No, this was not written as a joke...I believe this was done to eliminate abrupt throttle response and prevent the back tire from spinning out from under you around corners...

If I can find my source, I'll link it back here...

I know I read about it somewhere I just can't remember where, although the wikipedia page does elude to this, it doesn't explicity say it...

Not on the Blackbird. You are getting confused with the ZX14, which alters the powerband in the lower gears to aid rideability.

Thanks PJNXX... I thought I was losing my mind.

Yes, the ZX14 does have limiting in the lower gears to aid in rideability. There is a second set of butterfly valves in the intake to limit airflow in lower gears and lower RPMs resulting in much lower torque and power. IMHO, it is really quite fascinating. You can read about here.

On the Blackbird, the only sensor in the transmission is the neutral switch, so the ECU never knows what gear the bike is in... just whether or not the bike is in gear.

I thought I had read somewhere about this being true for the bird as well - possibly in England. This may have been done as a modification, not bought out as standard.

Tell you what I've not heard of this but my bike is a late 01 model . I can sort of understand the reasoning though opening a BB up in first unless your an experienced rider cab be a little hairy...I once read of a rider coming out of a junction opening it up wide hanging on for dear life and running out of road 150yds from the junction...hard acceleration makes it difficult to close the throttle doesn't it!!

As was mentioned, I think this only applies to the zx14. Even so, I was pretty sure that it's not nuetered down to 100 hp...I'll bet it's still closer to 130 or so. The '08s are supposed to be better, I think the system still exists, but they toned it back quite a bit. I haven't ridden a new one, but I hear they're much faster through the midrange and in the lower gears.

100BHP or 150BHP, who on earth whacks the throttle full open from standing or crawling in first anyway?

Maybe someone who has yet to know what gravel rash feels like?
