Dropped the bird today... with the wife on the back too... f*&k it!!.

Minimal damage, drag detector on right foot peg broken and pock marked lower fairing. Caught the bike just enough as the wife fell off (as she lay on the ground LHAO ) to let it down quite gently on the tar.

Probable cause:
CBS cuts in on front brake as you attempt to turn with rear brake engaged.

Possible solution:
Don't use rear brake in u-turn until bike is in motion.

This isn't the first time I've been caught like this (although this is the first time I've put the bike down) I usually sit stopped with the rear brake engaged, and when taking off from T junction have been caught dragging the rear brake and stalled it.

Leads me to believe it's the CBS - I've never experienced this on the SV650 - done plenty of U- turns with the wife onboard before.

I'm glad my first spill on a bike (after 7yrs of riding) was at very low speed.

Dude that sucks, I've been there. I actually hit a spot of mud on some crappy tires (Avon Azaro)with the same result, it breaks your heart. Fortunately it sounds like neither of you were hurt. My wife puts it this way: If you never ride it and keep it in the garage, it will be and stay mint. But if you live and really enjoy it, things are gonna happen.

Mate ! I feel for you !
Dropped a few large big bores in my time doing low speed U-turns.
More embarassing then anything else ... especially with the wife ribbing you for the next 12 months about your riding abilities

Not sure if it is a LBS issue though. I do a regular (illegal) u-turn at a set of lights on my daily commute and have found no issues.

Contrary to popular beliefs, large motorcycles have the turning circle of a submarine. U-turns and low speeds don't mix !

Supposively, there's a slight delay when you hit the rear brake, this is so you can control the braking better when you hit the rear pedal. I read it in a cbr 1100xx article. You must've had that delay when you hit the brake, and while turning, and made the front wheel slow your roll too much. I've had that effect a couple times.

Correction on the delay, what I meant by that, is that it's "progressive" when you hit the rear pedal, not as responsive as the front ones.

Pressure delay, you need to press hard enough to make it work.

Funny you should mention that. I was down at the World Supers at Phillip Island a week ago and while sitting on my bird hanging shit on a fellow rider ( on a Moto Guzzi ) I accidentally knocked it into gear as it was idling, lost balance and over she went. I caught her but the overwhelming weight got me and I had to lay her down on the bitumen. Very minor scratch to fairing and right hand mirror. I'm lucky thats all it was. Have since bought some nice shrooms from Jaws and got them today. Am going to get a Metzi Moto Skin from a guy here in Australia to safe guard against any further similar problems. Cheers.

Thanks for your concerns, only bruised pride.

While it is my first big bore bike, I'll leave the CBS system in tack, if it's pressure related activation then it's going to be more U-Turn practice and possibly some 'shrooms to protect future drops. (Ironic that i brought some for the SV and never dumped it!!)... such is life.

Sometimes the bruised pride hurts the most. ... and yes, I've done it too, just not on the Bird yet. The closest I've come to droping the Bird is when I put my foot down on some twigs at a stop. They acted like needle rollers and slid my foot about 6 inches sideways. I nearly tore a groin and back muscle catching it and hauling it back upright. Bastard thing. Once they decide to go, it takes some serious effort to change it's mind.

Sooner or later, we all lay her down. The Bird does not like "lock to lock" turns. And neither do I.

This is one of the few things that I can say aren't too good bout the Bird. Turning radius....ugghh!! Takes a bit of skill to turn her around in the garage and slow turns are a tad bit scary as well. Just be careful. These Birds are designed for the straight line.

Thank goodness, I thought I just sucked with the low-speed turns/u-turns. I had a 1974 CB750 that could turn like a Razr, nothing like the big bird. Glad you and the wifey were o.k.

Higher handle-bars and forcing yourself to a more upright position will drastically improve low speeds U-turns. Try it, and you'll notice the difference. Get the weight off of your wrists!

I changed the geometry on the front end of my bike and that made low speed u turns easy and effortless.
