Can the Bird be fired up when it is connected to a battery tender? Or does it need to be disconnnected?

I do all the time. I've never given it a thought. But It hasn't hurt anything yet. I've done it that way for years with other bikes too, with no problems.

Just make sure you disconnect before you hop on and ride... done that too. I have that 25ft extension on the battery tender too, so I'm able to get a good run before it snatches it out of the wall and drags it down my driveway...

Heh.. You're not the only one who's snatched the charger off the wall!

One guy over on WebBikeWorld (I think, at least) had an interesting solution, where he tethered the charger jack on the bike to the frame, and then tethered the extension with a little clip on the wall.
That way, when he invariably managed for forget to unplug, it would just unplug (hopefully) from the bike, and at worst, he would be repairing or buying a new extension, not a new wall wart charger.
