Hello

I would like to know what is the maximum litre box one can fit on this rack, I would like to know how strong it is before I purchase. What worries me is that it has no support and I would need it for long trips. Has anyone used it? what do you recommend?

Thanks and Regards
Nick

Hi Nick
I have a Givi top box on my BB and i have two boxes that go on it, the main one is a maxia 52 (52 litre) that hold two full face helmets plus some bits and bobs and a smaller one if i am just going off by myself.

I could use the big one all the time but i find you may get a bit of sway at high speeds.
Givi is well made but can be expensive, as the saying goes ....you get what you pay for.
Hope this helps
Bill

Hi ridesafe, I have the SW-Motech rack on my 'bird. Have a 46litre top box mounted at almost all times. The top rack is a lot sturdier than you might think. The plate is 4mm aluminium, and unless you fill up the top box with lead you'll never have to worry about weight load capacity..

Cheers!

Hi I love the sw motech racks, I would not get anything else.
they are very very sturdy.
sw motech makes real good high quality product.

I have the 52 litre maxia on my 919 on an alu rack, and never had a problem even filled up for a weekend in maine, no sway no problem even at highway speeds (ok not xx highway speeds but still that is on a naked 919)

the alu rack bolts right to the sub frame thru where tthe passenger grab rail is. it is very sturdy.

I was so happy. that I bought the sw motech side racks for the bird and am very happy.

all the motech racks are super sturdy, and release with just a twist of a dime, so that if you take them off, you have that super sport look.

they are more expensive than the givi setup but imho worth the money.

I have a Givi 52 liter case on my Motech rack as I found the Givi brackets a bit too ugly without the cases on. You may find that you have to retorque the mounting bolts from time to time as they might loosen without threadlocker. I remove my bike plastics regularly and don't want to use any bolt prep. One more thing, I had to add some additional closed cell foam on top of the plate to tighten up the case/adapter plate clearances as the case will move around a bit vertically. The adapter mounting holes in the aluminum plate also allow a bit of side to side play in the topcase as well (I may put bushings around the t-lock pins to tighten it up the fit some more), but otherwise, it is a good looking bracket that does not detract from the lines of the bike excessively.

BTW, I also have one on my fjr1300.

I agree also, I have never had any problem with the fitting of the givi adapter on the alu rack. no play at all
maybe an extra washer was put onto the quick release bolts when they installed it.

The lateral play stems from the fact that the plate has an approximately 1/2 inch diameter hole in it for the t-bolt to fit through and connect to the Dzus style clip underneath. The problem lies with the t-bolt diameter being about 1/4 inch by itself. This allows the box to rotate from side to side about one inch or so (measured from the edge of the trunk) laterally on the plate.

Nick,

I wadded up an 02 bird this spring, totalled by SF and moving on to a ST1300ABS (in current negoitiatons) (luv da bird and already having afterburner withdrawals). I have a SW-MOTECH ALU rack w Givi plate mounted that is 4sale (plus many other XX tidbits i will be posting shortly). If interested, PM me or reply here.

I used this setup (w 52l Givi) for several years on XX, worked great A+, and i've stuffed way more in there than rated (e.g. six 1.5L Captain Morgans from MGM Liquor no problem, bit wheelie prone though). This setup along w optional sideracks is a great way to go, my 1st choice if sticking w XX.

BTW, you can use the large oem XX frankenstein bungee bolts with this rig giving a more oem look plus still providing excellent bungee points. The SW-MOTECH installaton instructions don't mention this since they provide all new mounting bolts (albeit no Frankenstein style).

B out...

bhanxx, If you really insist on moving on to a new bike, do yourself a favor, have a serious look at a Yamaha fjr1300. The '08 models are coming in metallic black (yummy). This would be much more your style, especially if you are coming off of an XX.

I agree with toy nut
you may find the st1300 a bit too :"pepere" (french expression for older men who wear sansabelt pants, ice cream coloured polo shirts, blue windbreakers and white nikes, who go to the rascal house for the early bird special ) especially if you are used to the bird.
there are still guys who take their fjr's out for track days here and run with all the gixxers. (they scrape the bags sometimes but hey! )
