There's nothing like a 400 mile ride to get one acquainted with their new bike. Picked up my '01 in Richmond VA yesterday and rode it home to PA today. 400 wonderful miles. This bike sings. I'm pretty sure I'll be getting a speeding ticket if I'm not careful. Goosed it a bit at one point to get around traffic and looked down to see the speedo reading 103 mph. Felt like 80. All I can say is wow! The cruisers will be sitting in the garage for a while.
I do have a question though...are all the fuel gauges on the Birds as inconsistant as mine? Seems it reads full for a long time and then as soon as it gets below full it very quickly goes down to 1/4 tank (two bars) without equal time in between. I hope that makes sense. I guess I should use the trip odo as my gauge rather than just looking at the fuel gauge. |

Congratulations on the purchase. Careful on the speed, easy to get piched "by the man"
About the fuel gauge, my 1997 does the same thing, hangs at full for awhile, then drops pretty quickly.

Congrats on picking up your bird. I hope the wait wasn't too painful . My feul gauge will read full up to the point of travelling 130-140km - which is nearly half the range up to the flashing light. The next two bars will see me to 210-220km and then it drops rapidly to 260-270km and the flashing light.
You'll have to post some pics of your new best friend, we have been waiting a long time to see it .

| Congratulations on your purchase. Red really is the fastest color on the bird! The fuel gauge on my '01 does the same exact thing. Enjoy the ride, avoid the tickets!

Congrats on the 01. I love mine. Fuel gauge has done the same since new.
I ride conservatively and usually get 200 + miles on a tank, with reserve.
Check if the 6mm shim has been added under the rear shock. It really makes a difference in the twistys.

Thanks all! Redxxrdr, no shim under the shock. I am planning on getting that along with a few other "must have" do-dads. I just ordered the peg lowering brackets from Dave as I can tell from my initial ride those are much needed for me. Bike has Helibars and Staintune exhaust. I definitely need some new grips and need to adjust the bars a bit. At first I was putting all my weight on my wrists until I settled down. Since it was my first ride I was not exactly riding conservatively. I particularly enjoyed getting back on the highway from rest stops and riding parallel to the cars in the merge lane until I gave it a little throttle and pulled away like they were standing still .
