    advice on servicing

    I have an excellent mechanic BUT $450 - $500aussie (I think is reasonable) for full service normally but am needing to save $$$
    He will do excellent job tune and all fluids changed - brake clutch coolant oil filters blah
    I used to do all my own work on my GPZ900 but lost tools etc in house fire and so got lazy - preferring to pay for services
    Bird is such a quality fun piece of kit I've found it needs less molly codding - I do the maintenance basics

    Currently I have limited tools - spanners mostly.
    I've always liked working on my bikes but do i spend on tools or a quality mechanic

    If I do my own work what do you recommend I need e.g brake bleed gear. a cape, beer ?? etc
    Limited funds - would love a bike lift etc but not happening

    also I can nae find page where fella recommended minimal mods eg 6mm shim etc anyone have that link

    HI their i personally do all my own maintenance apart from brake and clutch fluid
    the oil and filter and coolant is straight forward i use a £35 scissor lift with two ratchet
    straps on the bars works fine buy your own tools or next time your be paying the
    mechanic again and still money left for Beers and i would recommend the shim

    A set of decent hex bits is the first essential along with a set of sockets (27 & 21 needed for the rear spindle the rest 8mm - 17mm) with that and some circlip pliers and screwdrivers I could probably rebuild a Bird with some 'improvisation'!
    You don't need brake bleed 'kit' it can all be done with a piece of plastic tube, still my favorite method.
    You can improvise with a block of timber under the centre stand to get the bike a bit higher and with a couple of ratchet straps you can make it safe, that should allow you to remove wheels and forks with ease.

    If you're mechanically inclined like you say you are, then go for the tools. $450-$500 bucks can get you some nice tools and a lot of them. That's only from ONE service. Besides no matter how good the mechanic is they always forget or or do something wrong. The stories I could tell about the "PRO" mechanics that I've had to correct. Plus the satisfaction of doing it yourself and correct is well worth it, IMO.

    Get a "FSM" and good tools you'll be all set. Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach him to fish and he'll eat for life. Plus the tools will let you fix many other things.

    An often forgotten piece of kit is a couple of jis(Japanese industrial standard) screwdrivers. Vessel make a nice ball grip version. Vacuum bleeders are nice but aren't needed. The spark plug socket from the factory tool kit is very useful as well. A voltmeter is useful in checking the health of the battery and charging system.

    Agree with Rollin, get the tools for that money. Means the next service is free.

    thanks all - I love this forum - Yes great inspiring advice. $400+ would definitely buy some decent tools + beers and I did enjoy servicing my previous bikes.

    Go for it PJM if you enjoyed servicing your previous bikes the Bird is no different ..... and compared to a lot of bikes the Bird has a surprisingly large amount of 'space' which makes servicing enjoyable.

    Just re-reading this thread I realised I (and others) didn't mention torque wrenches. Use some of your budget on one or two to cover the range you need since as you will appreciate sheared bolts and stripped threads are never good!

    Get these: SCA Oil Filter Pliers - 64-116mm - Supercheap Auto

    and you can change your oil without removing any fairing bits. Turns an oil change into a 10 minute job (plus drainage time). Best service advice I ever got. Thanks Mr Epoc.

    Ah yeah I used to have one of those and there is a supercheap & an autobarn nearby. cheers

    I'd add a pack of the fairing/infill popper fixings as they're going to break from time to time, possibly some copaslip for reassembly too? (makes life so much easier the next time). I only do basic servicing but each time it gets so much easier, the plugs for example I used to dread but can replace them in no time now, same with removing plastics and clocks etc.

    Looks like I'll be shopping for tools etc this week end BUT am getting new front tire first. Might have to rig up way to hold front wheel up till can get lift etc. Am thinking ceiling or wall hooks and some rope (truckies hitch or similar) or straps. But I did like the bike stand Adeyren mentioned in another thread - but $$$ and no supplier in OZ.

    If you put a piece of timber under the centre stand it is possible to weight the back of the bike down* and having removed the mudguard there is enough space to remove the front wheel. If you have an overhead beam you can lift under the top yoke.

    *sacks of ballast** on the seat is not that stable if you can ratchet strap the back down it is far better .....

    ** a wife can perform this task but from experience they are not keen to sit there for several hours
