For those of you that store your Birds away for the winter months...
What steps do you take to winterize your bird??
All I do is fill the gas tank and add stabalizer,
Change the oil and filter
Run the engine for 15 min to make sure stabalizer gets into carbs and turn off.
My bird is garaged stored and I use a trickle charger from time to time to keep the battery up.
I also sometimes will start and run the bird for 15 min about once a month.
Where I live I store the bird from Dec to about April/May 5 to 6 months.
I would like to know what everyone else does

I would rethink starting the bike for 15 minutes every month. It doesn't add to the engine life at all and just adds some extra wear to the reciprocating parts and cylinder walls. You can also consider covering the exhaust outlets
with oiled rags, then cover them with plastic wrap. This will help keep condensation/criters from entering the engine through the back door. For longer storage, I would consider blocking up the intake side as well with a similar method. Just don't forget to remove the plug befoore firing it up!
I like to remove the battery from the bike and charge it seperately, just in case there should be some acid or vapor boiling out of it in case of an overcharge/meltdown. It will also give you a chance to clean your battery terminals and cable ends next spring. Don't forget to detail the bike and get a good coat of wax on it while your at it.

I just keep riding her in winter. I havent really ever stored it as such. I know we dont get the severe winters you guys do in the US but I find riding her in the winter months sharpens your riding skill and you get a feel for what she and you can do in the wet conditions. I do steer away from snow though.

Yeah, but we don't get feet of snow. It's a bit hard to sharpen your skills in that!

Thanks toynut
The reason I start it is I don't want to let the carbs dry out. and critters are not an issue it it in a insulated garage attached to my house. Good idea about the battery, I use a 2 amp trickle charge just about once a month for 24 hrs and my battery seems to be fine, but never thought about vapor or acid boiling out ,Ill have to keep an eye on it this year.

My routine is the same as yours except I clean, wax & cover the bird before I put it up for the winter. I also use Sea foam as my fuel stabiliser.

I managed to buy some Sea Foam, in Washington, can't find it in BC. I normally use a Honda fuel stabalizer however, can I use Sea Foam as a stablalizer? It says yes on the can. Who else uses Sea Foam in their bikes and other vehicles?
