My 97 came with the fabulous lockhart tank bra.
it is a little worn now.
I had the bike polished, compounded and buffed.
do I put the bra back on (after cleaning it of course)
or do I go for a stick on tank pad?
Can she go topless??
let me know what you think.

I use bike-specific MagKnight CF magnetic tank side and top protectors on my bikes (they also make them in color-matching). The nice thing about is is that it is really easy to remove/reposition, so that you can rewax your tank from time to time. I do have some custom fitted and monogramed tank bras(both half and full coverage) that add an additional layer of protection, but, I find that they do detract from the lines of the bike a bit. The Bagster has a strong following among the touring crowd. Magnetic Tank Pads, Bra & Motorcycle Protector - Mag-Knight

When I got my bird it too had an LP tank bra. One day when I took it off to clean underneath it one of the mounting tabs broke. I have been riding it "naked" ever since. I occasionally get scuff marks on the rear of the tank from my leather jacket, but nothing that some polishing compound can't take out.

I don't have a tank bag, so I chose the TunerX Factory tank protector. So far, so good.

I have a MagKnight tank pad, but it tends to slide around easily, so I'm not really happy with it. I really don't want a stick-on tank pad, either, because I don't want to mess up the paint if I have to remove it. I don't like the look of the Bagster. Ditto for a tank bra. So for right now I'll keep using the MagKnight and just keep a protective layer of wax on the tank to keep scratches at a minimum. I'm pretty close to just chucking the MagKnight. A naked tank looks best anyway |

I just replaced my L.P. after almost six years, I'd worn a little hole in it from my rain jacket. However, my tank does have some "wear" marks that a clay bar doesn't seem to remove, from a tank bag I use. What's the dif between polishing compound and a clay bar?

I use clear self-adhesive plastic film on the knee cutouts and on the back of the tank. Had it put on at an auto pinstriping and window tinting place and it's virtually invisible. Also have it on the front of the fairing and on my front guard. My wife also has it on the front of her Mazda Miata to stop stone chips.

When I purchased my bike a few months ago, it came with a L.P. tank bra. I considered taking it off for about a minute, but like the look of it on, and cant beat the protection.

The problem with the lp tank bra is
1. sand / grit gets in when you ride and scratches.
2. when it gets wet in the rain, gets musty inside the bra
I am still looking for a good answer.
by the way anybody have any experience with the venture sheild protective kit?
says it is only for blackbirds from 04-07 is there a big difference?

I checked with previous owner he has had the bra on for 40,000 kilometers and never a problem with grit or rain.
when I had the bird polished it was super clean under the bra.
guess the guys in my association are just jealous of my baby

bagster full tank cover not an option for me.
1 as you know I spend most of my money on women and booze so....
2 I have frank thomas magnetic tang bag that I really like alot. (fits medium size atlas in the top etc etc )
3. here when you put that on, people think your tank is so dinged up you gave it the "darth vader" cover.
par contre I do hear alot of people are very happy with it.

Just pulled my LP bra off last weekend. In my opinion, my bike looks much better without it. Naked is the way to go.

Believe it or not, I bought my tank bag from Wal-Mart. It is a Bell. It is pretty decent size. Also, I haven't noticed any scratches on my tank (new ones anyway) from it. It was like $35.00 so it is a good cheap man's solution. As far as the quality, I can't complain. It has the clear plastic "window" on top for a map which has came in very useful. I have tried to locate it on Wal-Mart's website but I couldn't find it. They carry it in their Automotive department. If they car helmets and gloves at your Wal-Mart they should have it.

I put on a 1/2 tank Lockhart bra in 99 when I got her and it's been on ever since.
Lately it's been looking ragged, the bungie doesn't bungie, so I removed it. Does look better naked.
Now have the small rectangle Magknight on. Heat it with a heat gun when you put it on, will conform better and stay put.

Mine came with a MagKnight pad, so that's what I'm using still.
I've relocated it a couple of times so I can clean the tank and put some polish on, but it hasn't slipped all that much.
