Sweet Jesus !!
I must be one of the few guys here that never redlines my bike ... I see no point. The only time I give it some stick is on the on ramp to the freeway ... and then i'm overtaking cars.

I don't technically let it go to 10700 since I know that's not the best place to shift at,but 10000 ish.I only once took it over 260kph on the highway and went to an indicated 280 but I was no longer concerned where the tach was.At the strip it can hit 10000 in 5th-139 mph-over 220kph.God I love speed.

When my horns grow out of my forehead, and I accelarate as hard as I can, I usually shift as soon as I see the shiftlight flashing (set to flash at 10.000rpm). Taken account my reaction time, I guess I shift somewhere between 10.200 and 10.700..

Hit the limiter often in first, occasionally in second, a couple of times in third and once in fourth.
Never actually had her flat out though; I've been close I'm sure, but she just never seems to stop pulling.

I love my bird, I am quite content to keep it below the line. There is enough pleasure to be had without pushing the limits. It is interesting to hear about the experiences of the regular redliners, but it's not for my bird.

I always pull it up just before redline. Only now and then on some choice roads like through the blue mountains in NSW Australia..... cant help yourself on them... |

I wouldn't say "pampered" and as I'm still getting acquainted with my BB, I haven't yet. I can and I know the bike is more than capable, but the only red lining I've ever done was on my VFR on the track. No need for it on public roads IMO, really.

I never red lined my bike. I know from previous exp. that changing to higher gear 1k before red line almost always gives better speed, power and etc.
riding at red line is dangerous, and harms your bike, however changing gears just before 10.000 is the way to go.
when you look at your power graph at 9800rpm BB gives the max power and tork and logarithmically starts to loose power. so practice to change gears fast at that rpm is much safer and healthier than trying to gear up at red line say 11000..
But if the q is, how often i get to 9900rpm, well the answer is almost all traffic lights when without passenger (gotta teach those losers with mod cars not to mess with xx, right?? )

Whenever I can! My information on redlining a motor is that any where in the rev range up to redline is safe for the motor as long as it's to operating temp.

Stay in first gear. (I can break our highest state speed limit - 110kmh - in first gear)

Isn't it though!
If I become Prime Minister (or President) of this country I will make sure we organise roads that the blackbird can fully utilise. The price of fuel will be halved and no child will live in poverty!
It does save fuel if blackbirds stay under 7000rpm! Good for the environment! I'm doing my bit for the environment by keeping the revs below redline!

The whole point of a rev-limiter is to hit it, why else would it be needed?
It's a safeguard against over-revving, that's all.
Anyone who has never hit the rev-limiter should do so at the earliest opportunity.

The guy who helped me do all the flowbench work on my bike hocked a mappable ECU to an early BB motor that had done a sesson in a road race sidecar outfit on to a test bed, with a bit of work he had it reving to 13500.( sounded mad!!! ) Unfortunately when the limiter was set to 14000 there was a massive top end failure at 13700 when the heads popped off 2 of the inlet valve. The other failure I have heard of brought on by high RPM is No.3 main bearing cooking up and seezing.

Now that is a topic. I have been riding mine for 3 days and about
700 miles I live in twistyville and I gave her a go about 3
times in 3rd. Now I look at the redline like my buddies pit bull when he
leaves the room. Don't mess with him. I had the ingorance skinned off
me a long time ago. My hat is off to you who can. With respect. |

Very close to my house, is a nice stretch of highway with a smooth long right hand bend, where everytime I can pull from 1 till 4th gear flat out, redlining in every gear !!
Fantistic and addictive to do....police here don't mind speeding, as long as you do not get caught by the (fixed) camera's. If you get caught (which is stupid, 'cause the locations of the camera's are well-known), the traffic fine is AED500/- or about USD150/- that's all.
Nice country for birds, the UAE, outside the cities, no one mind speeding!! Imagine riding with a couple of friends every week and doing speeds of 280+

i push her to the limit every chance i get. have had her flat out in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th one time when i smoked my clutch. but ive had her about 180mph which i loved except the part when i flew past a blue and red flashing light, o well, never saw it again. (would've been hell if i did, the fine plus my dad is the sheriff)

there is nothing wrong with hitting the rev limiter. most limiters including the one on the birds are "ramped" meaning that starting about 500-1000 rpms before redline the computer will start gradually pulling timing from the ignition. otherwise the motor would wind up way past redline simply due to the inertia of the crankshaft. from my experience with these motors even in stock form they are safe 2 run about 13,000. on my last dyno test session before my motor poofed my bike zinged the limiter at 13,400 rpm and a dyno indicated 198 mph in 5th gear.

It's the part that says, "before my motor poofed" that I don't like. Once in a while because changing up at 8-9000 rpm seems to work for me.
