Not often, but if it's one of those times, every gear up through 4th, sometimes 5th, and once in a great while 6th - though it never makes it as it seems to top out at 179 with a limiter or something. I still got revs, it feels like it wants to take them, but the damn numbers stop changing!

I have had my 'Bird for a year and have never redlined in 1st or 2nd.
Let me ask this, if I was rolling along in 1st barely moving then twisted the grip to the stop, hit redline and clicked into 2nd without letting off how far up is the front tire likely to come? Assuming no bog, no spinning tire on a stock '97 'Bird?

That is about what mine -97 did stock. After a few mods it is easy to flip backwards on first and 2nd if not backing off the throttle.

If a stock 'Bird won't come over backwards on me, I guess I will try a full redline run in 1st and 2nd and see what happens!

The 2002 XX (and newer) are limited to 100hp in 1st gear - but I think that's just because of wheel spin in corners. |

I redline my bike pretty often seen the rev limiter a few times too. Burns off like mad in a six inch wheelie. Ive seen redline in fourth, feels, sounds like a rocket. |

Never redlined the Bird, only 6 months new, 1800 kms on the clock, just come off my licience restrictions, heading down to Phillip Island for some 2 wheel race action. Very tempted to see what the bird can do, but sure the boy's in blue will be out in force. |

Although I probably come close to it in 5th or 6th gear I'm not paying attention to engine rpm at that speed so I don't really know. But I'd have to say no, never. The damned thing damn near jerks your arms out of their sockets without going near redline so...
Is this one of those if-you-have-to-explain-I-won't-understand things? | Sometimes you have to just to keep up with your buddies.....

I ride my bike hard every day. That being said it never actually sees redline. The horsepower peaks at 9500rpm making it meaningless to take the bird any higher than 10,000 rpm. I shift at 10,000 to maximize the time I'm in the bike's powerband.
If you'd like to know where your power falls off get your bike dynoed and you'll see where your power peaks and begins to fall which is where you want to shift to maximize your performance. Quote: |
But by the time I'm redlined in 2nd I'm doing almost 100 mph
| If you had an R1 you could do 100mph in first gear alone. |

Every track day, which is once a month, but rarely on the street.

Interesting Birdman, you must have found a long stretch of road to hit the limiter in 6th, you also must have balls of steel. |

surprisingly you dont need that much road to get there, its the bit you need to slow back down that ya really want
wish it got there as fast as my ZX10-R though, i hit limiter in 6th down the straight at Phillip Island last Nov, now im looking to get rid of the timing retard in 1st to 4th gear and no speed limiter.
Captain to Scotty......... i.............neeeeed.............more............ ..power!!!! |
