So I was just thinking this morning, my '97 is 10 yrs old and never been down. I also thought that maybe I should not ride it this week in preparation of my Deals Gap trip later this week.
I'm sitting still at a red light in the left turn lane waiting to go when I see another vehicle approaching from my right on a collision course. I start honking, no response. I then turn my handlebars trying to create room, and eventually fall over leaning so far to the rt trying to get out of his way, all the while the cager truck is enters my lane. I cannot tell if we made contact, possibly his left rear tire hit my front tire. Luckily he stopped, and luckily there was a good witness who stuck around. Police wrote report and it should show who caused the accident.
Neverless, no injury, and she ridable-but not cosmetically perfect as she was on the right side.
How frustrating......grrrr. |

I dropped mine off the center stand the second week I had it.
The important part is that you are allright.
A few scratches will make it less likely to drop at the Deals Gap.
Fix it after your trip.

I think we "all" drop our Bird once in our lives. In the garage, at a stop lite, on an off cambre parking lot, on a ferry, a too tight u-turn, and the like. Sorry, good think it's only plastic.

I hate reading about all these bikes going down.
I dropped my old bike twice taking it off the centerstand on unlevel ground.
Learned my lesson!
It ain't happenin' on this one!
I realize that I can only control myself and that I have no control over others. I trust no one and I always leave more than enough room for people to do their idiotic stunts.
It's getting really bad out there. You can't be careful enough.

Glad to hear you're o.k. Just be happy having "stupid" accidents. They're much better than the serious kind A little ding on the bike is better than a big ding on you. Stay safe.

its always good to survive those kinds of contingencies, especially when its just facia damage and the bike is still ridable.... its really just the embarrasement that lasts beyond the expesive rebuilds, but it will keep a rider honest and intouch with the environment he or she is riding in......

Plastic is cheap, that plus the fact that every bird should have a little battle damage on her some where....shows that we use em.
Glad your OK bro.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the concern. I spoke to the cager's carrier and they paid for the dmgs, including a new pair of leather work shoes that got torn in the tumble. ($1,500+) Wow, hard to believe a simple tip over could cost so much.

That's awesome that it's all covered.
There's an intersection on my way home where that happens to me all the time, people come from the right and totally cut the corner.. luckily re-correcting their line at the last minute to avoid me. Something about that interesction really encourages cagers to cut the corner. I finally started going home a different way when I'm on my bike to avoid it completely!

Venus, hang on to any lightly damaged plastic that you might be replacing with new. You may want them as spares or to help another fellow forum member with a worse bit of luck in the future.

Cager: Someone who gets around "protected" by a cage on 4 wheels. Sometimes referred to as "motorists". Often found on road traveling along totally oblivious to anything that is not immediately infront of them and only partially aware of that. Many further distract themselves from the task of controlling their cage by talking on handheld phones, sending text messages, applying makeup, reading etc. An extremely dangerous species, not actually malicious, but often stupid.

STOP SCREAMING PEARL Yeah, the price of repair is pretty high. My damage was over $5k with forks, upper plastics, ram tubes, windscreen, etc. It doesn't take much to get it cranked up. Glad to hear it all worked out well!!
