Hey guys, may just ge a lame worry, but I just re-ordered my Factory Jet kit and noticed that they don't sell them for the California model. So Here's the questions. 1. Is there a way to tell if you have a California Model from Serial number or externall to ripping all the fairings off the bike and 2. why would a jet kit not work on a California Carbed bike?
My bike is in Texas so I think I am safe, but in the event that somebody ebayed it over here, I figured I ought to look into this given my Irish luck. |

I think the California models all have catalytic converters. Large bulge in the pipe just before the can.
But not positive

Lift the tank. If there's a large can and a more than 5 total hoses running off the tank, it's a California model. If you have a large empty space under there with two larger hoses running off the left and right, two small hoses running down directly from the tank, (breather and overflow), and one hose running from the petcock to the engine block, (vacuum), you've got a 49 states model.

Well I have no catylitic converters. But I do have a cannister towards the back of the tank. Has one line running to it. Hoses are like the 49 state model. I have one large hose off the Right side, one large hose off the left, but there is an open spot for a big hose below the one on the left and cant figure what it connects to (no Hose on the fitting and looked a bit oily until I cleaned it)
At any rate can you not change the needles or jets on a California model?
Thanks,
Scott

Scott: Now I'm confused. You're not supposed to have both. The jetting in the CA model is slightly different to go along with the cat system. There is probably a slightly different thread count, or diameter or something esoteric like that that doesn't make it profitable for the company to make the kit. Anyway, I'm at work right now, but when I get home in the AM, I'll pull out the shop manual and try to figure out what you've got from your description. The other thing you can do is run a VIN check on one of the "carfax" type sites. That'll definately give you the answer. Lastly, you could run it by the dealership. They'll know from the VIN, too.

I will see if I can decode it on carfax. The canister looks like the charcole cannisters on old carburated cars. Small hoses go to it (looks like something to handle gas vapors. Let you know what I come up with on the VIN Check.
What do you do that makes you work so late?
BTW Any chance you are going ROT in June?

That sounds like the CA set up. I'll check. I am priviledged to be a critical care RN. Someone has to keep these people alive at night. Silverbird has a short thread going about ROT. I'm thinking I'll probably go if other sportbikers are going. The last time I went, I went with a Harley group, and was the only one who didn't have engine difficulties. That was a few years back, and I haven't gone since. This year, though, it sounds like there will be a few people there I know from the TWT website and here, so yeah, I'll be there.

Scott: You've got a CA model. The coffee can is called an "Evap Canister". You have evap cav solenoid valves, evap purge control valves and apparently a different PAIR valve set up than a 49 state model. The reason your jet system won't work is because the carbs are different in model- VPS1A for yours and VPS2A for the 49 state. The jet needle numbers are different, too, J5FU for yours and J5FZ for the others. (I have not clue one what that means, sorry.) Also, the adjustments are different. If you check the top of your air cleaner, there should be a factory sticker on it that shows Vacuum hose routing- this says "CALIFORNIA VEHICLE" on it. The 49 state version doesn't have it.
Sorry.

Man, that sucks if your right. So the 49 states model doesn't have an evap canister? Damn my Irish luck. Now I need to find a different jet kit.
Look into ROT. I am going and my buddy drives a BMW. Plenty of sport bikers. I hear you about the Harley's. I haven't been on a ride with a Harley yet where one of them didn't break down.
Hope I can find a kit for the new set of pipes I just bought.
Thanks for the help.
Scott
