I have been running 10w-40, i have switched to 15w40, but am thinking of going to 20w-50 for the summer months.

i was wondering what grades/weights does everyone use and why?

I run 10-40 but I don't ride in super hot weather.

Oooh, must resist reading oil thread...can't resist, dammit. Now I'm going to give an opinion and be an asshole:

Go here for everything you ever wanted to know about oil: - Bob is the Oil Guy

I run Rotella 5W/40 synthetic in all my bikes. At any cold rating, 0, 5 or 10, the oil is too viscous to do its job right anyway, hence the importance of warming up for a minute. So a synthetic that both clings better when the bike is stored, and flows better cold, is the way to go. At least for me it has worked over many seasons and 0000s of miles.

Now I have to fecking google Wolf's Head Golden 30. How can all these oils be so different. Motul Semi 10-40 for several years.

How can all these oils be so different.
it's the procedure they follow to reach their final product..

Simple oils usually start with a mineral base then they add the approriate additives to reach the API spec that the product is intended for..

For the semi ones they start with a selectively refined mineral base or with ester based oils (not necessary mineral)..

The full synth aspect has a totally reversed engineering procedure...they build their own base oil setting the characteristics of the oil on molecule level to the specs that they need..

I believe Honda has a list of recommended oil viscosities, not just the 10-40.
I use Rotella T-6 full synthetic 5-40 for cool weather and Mobil 1 full synthetic 20-50 motorcycle oil during the heat of the summer.
The turbo uses oil for cooling as well as lubrication and therefore puts more demand on the oil.
Sounds strange but I change oil and filter when I change my tires, around 4500 miles on Pilot Powers.
Maybe even stranger sounding, I flip the front sprocket once at the same time and replace it the next.
4 front sprockets so far with the same chain and rear sprocket...7 sets of tires...30,000+ miles
1 1/2 turns on the chain adjusters since I put on the chain...LPS 3 for chain lube every other gas fill, which is about every 400 miles.
And you thought this was just going to be another boring oil thread...lol

I used semi-synth 20w-50 on my blackbird untill 40.000 kms...no problem at all..next 10.000 was a mixed choice of 10w-40 and 20w-50 and still great..after 50.000 kms i run periodically on full synth and have a better feel on the gearbox...see the recommended viscosity index on the service manual to match for your area's temperature values...

The true secret is simply "clean oil" but...The best indicator for me when to change my oil is when the notorious shift stutter between first and second gear becomes noticeable. I have used Mobil1 MX4T also known and Mobil Racing 4T fully synthetic 10W40 for over 100,000 miles now. I have NEVER torn down the motor as of yet. I average about 4000 miles between changes. Works for me :smilebig:
