    First Bird - XX-V versus XX-5

    Evening.....

New here and have joined in advance of the impending arrival of my first bird, which was as of tonight an XX-5 I've seen with 11k on the clock.

Stupidly been surfing the net and come across an XX-V in titanium (v cool) for just over a grand less, but mint. 22k on the clock.

    Both totally standard.

    Carb v FI
    1998 v 2005
    Datatool v HISS
Hugger v no hugger (I like huggers - that's not a strapline btw)
    Titanium v Silver

Ģ1k difference isn't much I guess, especially when you think that 7 yrs from now, the 2005 model will be as old as the 1998 model is now.

The purists seem to favour the carb.

Someone help with this birdache conundrum... pleaseeee...

Can't handle reading yet another review about top end speed...
"...smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast..."

well most will always say go newer but as we know newer isn't always better per say! i favor the carbie but i have one, i have ridden with a couple of fuel injected ones ,but didn't see any advantage over mine so ! what ever floats your boat!

    I like carbies best man.
So much less to go wrong.
Much smoother throttle action (with properly serviced carbs...)
More get up and go, even though it evens out at 150+mph due to the ram air. But up to that the carbie picks up much stronger..

But... each to their own man! I kinda like the fact that my bike is 15 years old... Haha! Makes their faces even funnier to watch when you destroy them...

Lets break this down a bit ..

    Visual differences
    Tail light
    Indicators
    Dash
    Screen
1 control on the left switch block
    and decals

    Riding differences
    Negligable

    Grin Factor
    No difference whatsoever

Do you have any laws covering the age of the vehicle insured.. Here some insewerance companies do not want to comprehensively insure a vehicle over 10 year old.

I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet..

But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

    Re: First Bird - XX-V versus XX-5

I have no doubt that in years to come the first Carbies will be labelled 'The Classic Blackbird' and good condition ones will fetch decent money. Riding it might prove more difficult if the Tree Huggers win the battle, no CAT, Big Carbs and Big Jets = Planet Fu.ker.
Carbs require 'tending' to keep the motor running really sweet ..... and many riders nowaday (not talking about here!) do not get their fingers grubby and expect a perfect ride every time they press 'go' no matter how much they neglect maintenance ................. which takes me to the first injection models (pre CAT in Europe and elsewhere). I may be biased here since I own a 99 inj but these appear to have the best of both worlds - no CAT and strangling down of the fuel system, yet with minimal maintenance they keep flying.

I do like the digi dash for one simple reason, I've been slightly long sighted since birth (doesn't get better with age) and I can clearly read the speedo on the digi whereas on the 99 Bird with its 200+ clock, distinguishing between 2 marks is not always instantaneous. Even if the figure shown is a bit of a 'whoops' I would still prefer to know.
