When someone looks at your bike and says to you "why would you ride a bike like that (style)"?? Then you look at their low rider style bike, what do you say without insulting them? |

Usually, I find it's really not worth it. You could come back with the truth, but that will just cause more hate-n-discontent.
Frequently, if I can tell that the questioner is actually curious or wants a serious response, I do tell them the truth:
"Because this bike does the job I need it to do". |

Well, one day, while in a mall parking lot, I stopped to chat with a guy (reconized him from a rally), he on his low rider style bike with his wife, me in a skirt and heels.
Oh he said we are on our way to try out a new bike.
I said, oh really, what are you looking at getting next?
He (rattles off another low rider style bike) continues... a bike I always wanted to own.
I said, oh yeah, why? He was right puzzled, looked at me and said, oh, you ride a crotch rocket, you ride for speed.
I couldn't believe my ears, I just stood there, I was truly stunned. I said, well, no acutally that is just part of it, they handle like a dream. Then I just looked at him, I realized he didn't even care to hear what I had to say, he was hell bent on his low rider style.
Sure makes me wonder............... |

I think to each his own. I like the speed - which you can get with some "lowriders" - but you also get the handling with sportbikes. I also find sportbike riding position much more comfortable.
Not to mention STYLING!!

i agree every one is different but i find the riding position and cruising speed on a blkbrd great for me on interstate trips especially nt aust where there are few speed limits.the worst problem this year it was very windy for 21 days which slowed the cruising speed 20 to 30 kms p h,also knocked the fuel economy down.regards to all. peterpan

I like to turn into a corner at "reasonable" speeds and not be scared that I will not make it.
Also I don't like to get a numb bum

I tell him - "Yup, I used to ride one of those also, but I had the grown-up version, a Valkyrie. Then one day I decided to try the other side to see what the allure was. I quickly found out how hard I was working on tight roads with that big pig, how much fun great brakes are, that 0 to 100 in under 7 seconds makes my blood boil, and that the sit up position of a cruiser was actually harder on my back than being slightly bent over on my current ride."

A few years ago, I let a guy I know ride my bike for an hour or so, he got off the bike and said, holy my hands are killing me, how do you ride so long without pain in your hands? The guy has years and years experience yet never rode a sportbike before, I felt bad after he told me that. This same guy can ride a wing and have sparks flying while in a turn.
LOL...I laughed, said you had all your weight on your hands? Man, sit back, use your back a little more and enjoy the ride! Next time he did and was amazed at the difference in his comfort level - he is now , said, omg I had no idea how these things handled so well! Not so bad on the back either!
Oh yeah, that's what I am talken about! |

I've ridden all three, sport, standard and cruiser and they each have their benefits. I must say, my wrists hurt more on sport than the others. The standard (74 CB750) is the most comfortable but the cruiser (my brothers) wasn't so bad either but I didn't like the wind up my pants effect. The BB is comfortable, but there's always more pressure on your.... nether regions. Like others have said, to each his own. As far as I'm concerned, if you ride, you ride. It doesn't matter what. There's too much hate in the world as is. I don't care who you are or what your on, I'll still shoot you props when I roll by.

My reply to the crotch rocket comment is "Because it's safer" and then describe the considerably better handling, braking and tire characteristcs which allow me to avoid obstacles and brain dead cagers.
Their next reply is usually one of comfort, and I explain that having ridden most types of bikes at some point, nothing is as all day comfortable as my XX. And if they disagree, I suggest that we make a trip for pinks. # hours in the saddle, we ride together. Whoever quits first wins. That shuts them up.

Yeah, but even I wouldn't take that bet against you. I've read your ride reports.
Hey ya, Rich- good to see ya.
I've ridden the different styles too, and for me, I'll be honest, I get a charge out of being able to twist the wrist and have an immediate gut-wrenching response, whilst knowing there is absolutely no way I'm ever going to be a good enough rider to use all the potential this bike has.

NEARLY had me a taker few months ago..
I was at the Essen Hause here in Madison, at a work gathering. One of the guys who came out is a member of the local chapter of CCC Riders... and he was repeatedly giving me the "you riceburner, crotch rocket" load of shit.
I politely suggested that my bike is far more comfortable than his, and that I'd be more than willing to show him. He got all "No way, those crotch rockets are all too uncomfortable, etc..." Right after I suggested that we do it for pinks.. A friend who knew me asked me about the route to Vancouver this year. While I was answering him the guy sorta dissapeared.
He's never said another word about it since.

When I moved to this complex a couple months ago, as I was washing both my bikes, I was friendly with a guy a couple units away who rides a LOUD Yamaha cruiser. I went over and checked out his bike and he returned the courtesy by checking out my bikes and asking a few questions about them -- mostly about horsepower, but I told him what they did well and why I had two. He seemed genuinely impressed by the power, less so with the handling issues, but amazed at my having spent the money for two bikes, even though I told him that I had well under $30K in both bikes together, including aftermarket additions.
Funny thing is that a little later, as he was driving out and I was using the chamois to dry the bikes off, he asked me seriously: "nice bikes, but why don't you buy a Harley; then you could be one of the guys?"
"Because that isn't why I ride -- I bought and own what I like to ride, just like you."

While teaching a motorcycle course one day I explained to guy just starting to ride that I consider the bikes to be in this order when it comes to "handling" sportbikes, sport touring style, wings, then cruisers. He coudln't believe it (he wants a cruiser). Stood there looking at me......why? So I explained the rake of the forks, distance between the wheels etc. I said, ever watch a guy come in aparking lot, turns on a dime, guy comes in on a cruiser, needs a country mile to turn? I think then he understood. It is so much more than speed, although I must admit it (speed) sure brings a smile to my face.
