first post..just bought a 97 with 4400mi. it was kinda crashed and been sitting in the back of the shop since 01.
it was insurance salvage, i heard it hit a telephone pole. it needs nose plastic and a windshield..the rest i can fix. i cleaned the carbs, put a battery in it and it ran. it has a two bros..missing 1 muffler and an has been jetted..i plugged of the one pipe, changed the oil..two easy trip around the block and 3 trips to redline...with the front wheel up all the way through second gear..@4300 ft. i don't like hondas much, have ridden a few hot rodded zx14s and busa's and my usual driver is an 85 gpz 9 with a 86 triumph 1200 dayton and the b-bird is kinda odd looking but i am fricken impressed...good smooth power everywhere!! strange brakes and a place on the back of the fuel tank that ain't comfortable at all..but it will be my new driver.
as for miles? i wore 2 gpz motors out already and triumph is gettin tired..i run between salt lake and lake havasu at least twice a month..640mi and 8.5hrs. (yes i ride fast and no tickets for 7 years) one way..even the gearing is right on...could it be possible that i now have a bike that i don't have to put motor in every year?..gee 53 years old and i am still learning!

I think the Bird's motor is bullet proof but that doesn't mean it can't be broken. Anyway, welcome but this isn't the site to admit you don't like Honda's very much. The the Bird is odd looking, you know on this site that is "fighting words", youngster. I hope your frame is OK, hitting a pole can hurt it. Cheers

the 'honda' thing that was a compliment...i been stuck on kawi/zuki stuff for 20 years..and for me to change brands
says a lot for the quality i see and read about. as far as the way the bike looks...i work at a motorcycle salvage and repair shop...and i use to do radical custom bodywork so expect that the bike might change a little here and there.
bike didn't get hurt bad at all and i got it for 900 and i think the spedo might be off a little but it ran 8200 in sixth last night and was still pulling hard and it was as stable as anything else i ever rode at that speed and i took seat off and could stand on the frame down to 15mph with no wobbling.

Just got back from first test ride...1950 miles...i was gone 10 days but i did the milage in 3...that is if the odo reads correct with an 18 tooth front sprocket. I did the run from salt lake city to lake havasu city az. in 8hrs flat..'bout 600 miles. It runs pretty decent 100-125 and a couple stretches in the 145-160 (yes mph) as long as it isn't windy. 30+mph desert x winds had me back to one of my old tricks to take the strain off my neck...short bungie cord from upper triple tree to the chin on my helmet and a rubber band breakaway in case something happened.
....Next trip i need a trottle lock, a little taller windscreen
and some heated grips cause next trip is in 5 weeks. Oh yea, and a drop of loctite on all bolts for front plastic...
I think 14 total fell out cause of the x winds were shaking everything....but my repairs passed the test..nose piece is about 70% repaired/modified and both side panels were a mess when i got it...and i spent $0 on parts. I will
post some pics after i wash it...it is still in black epoxy primer and i still have a couple small dents in tank to fix.
i did have some fun with 3 guys on matching fj 1300's.
I was crusing at 95-105 and they caught up to me. One guy started following right behind me so i just kept slowly twisting the throttle till i hit 130...he went around me at probably 140..i waited till he got back in the lane and i went left to pass him...just fast enough to get by...
and before i could get past him i think he gave it all he had....well..can't let that happen...so i taped 5th and pinned it till i felt the rev limiter and clicked 6th pinned
for about 3 seconds ran it to about 9 grand and i had put 200 yards on him.......next gas stop i got surounded by 3 guys wantin to know what the hell was i ridding? "it's just an old cbr 900 with a pipe and different plastic" That flew till one guy spotted the headlight...we all had a good laugh...the one guy said he didn't feel quite so bad about getting waxed till i reminded him the bike is almost 12 years old and carberated...and jetted for 4500 ft. and 200 cc smaller...but then again they did have saddlebags..
Yep..this is my second street honda...last one was an original 550/4 and im starting to like it...i just hope the motor stays together..i know it got broke in hard..4400 miles with 15 tooth front sprocket
