Where to buy bike stuff in the states

As some of you may have noticed i will be leaving on a 2 week trip into the states next week (from Canada).

i have no idea where a guy would buy oil and other bike supplies if needed if something were to happen on the way.

so any suggestions would be appreciated.

(im coming through Montana, Idaho Nevada, Calefornia, Oregon & Washington)

Thanks,

Peter

Re: Where to buy bike stuff in the states

I'm thnking pretty much the same as in Canada. Auto supply stores, motorcycle specific stores, larger retail stores, Walmart, Target, etc. Shouldn't be a problem. Motorcycle specific in the middle of Montana, Idaho, and Nevada, could be a problem, but probably not.

Tires and stuff pretty much motorcycle specific stores , but you can get tires through the internet quickly if need be.

Anything else post up, I'm sure there is someone around.

Yeah, not too much different in a commercial/retail sense here. If/when you need something just give a shout out as there are emmbers scattered about and someone should be close enough to lend a hand or have lunch with

If your Bird is in top nick, and you're only riding 6,000 kms, then you don't need anything, imo. A patch kit, chain lube, plexis, a credit card, Yankee $'s, rain gear, tire gage, I've never taken more than that. Plus gear, change of clothes, and the like. Radar, phone, Ipod, gps, and the like. I don't travel with a spare r&r, battery, stator, fuses yes. Have a great time.

Re: Where to buy bike stuff in the states

Yes, travel insurance is a good idea. You can check with Alberta Medical, you credit cards, Employment Blue Cross if you have it. No point in being over insured. It's expensive for me at my age. However, I do buy it. Bike tools are a given. I've never had roadside assistance, where did you purchase it? Alberta AA? OMG, my first trip from Van to T.O, I was so naive. Regardless of what Lois believes, I think a patch kit is important. So is lots of dosh, lol. Have a great time!! You will. Don't ride at night, IMO. Do you have a pillon? What do you have for very hot weather? A Camel back, Under Armour, Nike, Sugoi, and the like? FWitsW, I ride in a mesh leather Joe Rocket and I pull a white, high tech long sleeve T-shirt over it when it gets very hot. Reflective. I recommend lots of h2o and I also use Gator Aid when it's very hot. Do a search of hot weather riding, lots of different stategies and techniques. Cheers, Listen to your instincts. Be safe!

Re: Where to buy bike stuff in the states

We'll be taking the I-15 from what i gather (at Coutts & Sweetgrass).

Insurance as well as roadside will be through AMA/CAA.

Hot weather items:
shorts underneath riding pants (joe rocket)
tshirts and some underarmour for the hot days
bringing a ssweater and jeans for the colder spots. (rain gear too ofcourse)
No pillion. just me and my buddy, both our own bikes.
I've got 80ltrs of side bags and possibly be brining a back pack.
i also picked up a tire guage, multi tool and am still trying to locate a patch kit with the CO2 cartridges.

as i wear glasses i am bringing different visors:
Chrome/tint for hot day time
blue the less bright days
Clear for dusk or other

I've got a set of icon leather gloves and also a set of the joe rocket summer ones
(which are fairly thin and very ventilated)

Im planning on riding full gear the entire trip as they will be unfamiliar roads.

I picked the bike up last night with a new set of Bridgestone Battleaxe BT021's,

The manual fan switch is rigged up, now just to do a fluid check before taking off.

I've been contemplating a camel pack, but figure i cant fill it with tap water either so having to buy bottled water i may pass on the pack (unless they have a bit of storage capacity as well, than i may pick one up).

im hoping to pick up a nice set of oakleys and possibly a new lid down south.

i ordered a new Joe rocket atomic 3.0 Jacket, fingers crossed as its still being shipped and not sure if i will have it on time. i've got some free maps from AMA, but am also awaiting a GPS unit for shits and giggles on the way.

thats all for now. i'll keep you all posted on progress. thanks for your input.

If they can get it to you on time, try a Cargol puncture repar kit. Comes with plugs and CO2 cylinders.

Re: Where to buy bike stuff in the states

Your local dealer should sell patch kits. Do you wear prescription sunglasses? After a 1/2 day tomorrow, I'm off for 10 weeks. Road trips on the way. Maybe I'll ride out and bother Lois. lol Have the time of your life.

Re: Where to buy bike stuff in the states

i looked at the "ATV tire patch kits" at Canadian Tire, with the Co2 cartridges, but am not convinced that they will help. the cartridges are not enough to blow up the tire in the middle of the boonies, plus i imagine the tire is flat when i try to fix it?

Check out this 12v pump. I carry one along with a Cargol repair kit under the seat. Seems to be a well built pump that will do the job required of it.

Re: Where to buy bike stuff in the states

I recommend a camelback if you are planning to ride inland around southern California, its pretty warm these days especially in the desert... we hit 103 degrees F yesterday. I fill mine about 3/4 full with ice and then the rest with water... good for drinking and keeping cool.
If you are picky about tap water, hit any grocery store and get one of the gallon bottles to fill up the camelback.

Have a great ride!

j

I've had some VERY good service from Assured Assistance, the RBC travel insurance.

Enjoy your trip, we just came back from a lot of that area, need route suggestions? (We managed 8500 km with only 100 or less on interstate. (hwy 2 doesn't count, but we got off that after Calgary).

I enjoyed going via Cardson, rather than Lethbridfe/ Sweetgrass. I-15 is way too much like Hwy 2.
