| California coast site seeing ideas
so myself and a buddy are doing the following loop from July 4th to 18th. Calgary --> las vegas - 3 day ride Las vegas --> san fransisco - 1.5 day ride San fran --> seattle - 2.5 day ride seattle back to summerland, BC and than calgary again. - 2 day ride. we've got a few things planned already, but could use some input on the following. the stretch from San Fransisco, what is the nicest ride? (coast or inland) anyone else done a similar trip and have suggestions what to watch for? also, seems that super 8 is cheapest to stay at so we'll probably be aiming for those the entire trip. site seeing ideas are welcome, cost savings and possibly where to and where not too get gas. (we're from canada, so not familiar with some of the yankee ways) Regards, Peter | |

I suggest you join www.pashnit.com for a ton of info on California. I "might buy www.destinationhighways.com Cali and Wash State. Perhaps a little out of your way. I've ridden the N Sieras and highly recommend it. Therefor go to #1 and #101. Crossing from 101 to the I.5 will put you on fantastic roads. I would go east on the return and pick up #97 all the way to #2 or #20 then cross into Canada and go home on #3 through Crow's Nest pass. These are just suggestions there on many a vairied route to get to where you're going and home again. Good Luck. There are many affordable motels in the States and gas and food is cheaper.

See my posts below on Cornering Consciousness for info on the PCH along California's coast. Also, if you head through St. George, Utah on I-15 to Vegas, give us a shout and we'll fill you in on local rides, maybe even give you a place to crash. |

If you're coming down to san fran you may as well come a bit farther down and go through yosemite. There are tons of great roads here and some absolutely amazing scenery

I've ridden San Fran to Portland many times. The coast (Cal Route 1 and US 101) is really beautiful, but on much of it you'll hit lots of small towns and likely get stuck following motorhomes and other slower traffic. Mornings and evenings will be quite cool with fog, so bring warm riding gear. I'll look over my maps and make some recommendations for inland route alternatives... less traffic, faster roads, and still lots of good scenery.

In California, the roads that connect I 5 to 101 are excellent and the connecting roads from 101 to #1 are also interesting. imo
