Memorial Day Ride up Mt. Lemmon, Tucson Area

Howdy, All.

I know this is short notice but I intend to take a ride up Mt. Lemmon north of Tucson on Memorial Day Monday. Valley weather is likely to be warm but the temperature difference up on the mountain will be much nicer.

If anyone is interested in joining me, drop me a line and we'll put something together. For those that have never driven the Catalina Highway, it is a pretty good road up and down with several passing areas and many pull-outs for sightseeing. The only down-side is that you are "supposed" to buy a pass to visit if you intend to stop anywhere other than at the top or one of the business locations in between. I have never received a ticket or known of anyone getting a ticket for stopping without a pass, but who knows.

It sucks that we pay taxes to build/maintain the road then are taxed again to use it, but isn't that how the government works these days? Pity.

Near the top is Summer Haven and they have a couple of places with food and drink, but they tend to have higher prices. Guess that is the price you'll pay for them to truck grub up the mountain.

Ski Valley is pretty much the top and they have a ski lift that (sometimes) is running in warm weather to take folks to the top of the mountain for hiking excursions or vantage points for photography. You can park (if you can find a spot) and hike up the hill if you desire, but it is STEEP.

Across the street is the Iron Door Cafe and they have a nice place, with an outside big balcony. In years past they have placed feeders for humming birds and they flock there in droves. The food there is very good and the prices moderate; their bowl of chili and cornbread is excellent plus they sell various adult beverages.

Again, if anyone is interested in joining me, we can set a time to meet at a Circle K parking lot just before the turn off to the Catalina Highway; it is on east Tanque Verde Rd.

I figure on meeting at the Circle K around 0800-0830 and stands up no later than 0900. Earlier is ok with me if folks chose to start out earlier.

This should ensure some decent riding and while I don't know what time the Cafe opens, I'm confident they'll be open for lunch that day. Still, I can't guarantee this, so you might want to drag along some power bars, fruit or whatever.

Hope some folks can make the trip.

I rode Mt Lemmon last year with the SWR group, fun ride.
Won't be able to make it for this one due to prior plans on Mem day
have a safe run up and down and watch out for bicyclists and LEOs

Howdy, FG.

I have made this ride before and many times in a car to truck, so I know what you mean about watching out for other cyclists and LEO. I expect it will be a good ride and much cooler than down in the valley.

While it isn't terribly hot in the Tucson Valley (yet), it will be nice to get out of the heat, if only for a few hours. If nothing else, it will be a nice ride and anytime I get some saddle time on the BB is a great time.

Take care.
